"*Quel amrun,"* Haldir replied dully, looking off to the east. Fereveldir settled in amongst the branches and looked at him. "It sounds as if your morning has not started out very well, *meldir."* [friend] Haldir sighed. "It is well enough. How was your leave in the Grey Havens?" "It was wonderful! I enjoyed myself immensely. I know you tend to favour Imladris for your holiday, but you really should see the Havens at least once." "Perhaps I will." Fereveldir grinned. "So… I hear you and Siddhir caused quite a stir whilst I was away." Haldir groaned. "It was weeks ago. One would think they would tire of gossiping about it by now." Fereveldir chuckled. "Come now, Haldir. You know full well that most in Lorien find you and anything or *anyone* you do quite gossip worthy. Long has it been so." "It would be my wish for someone else to have that position," Haldir muttered. "It really is quite complimentary, you know." Haldir frowned. "I would rather they hated me. That I could deal with." "They respect you immensely, Haldir. It is not often you are caught with your guard down. Believe me, it is all in jest. So, tell me- is it true? Did our Lord *really* catch you and Siddhir together?" Haldir sighed again. "Yes." Fereveldir's eyes widened. "*Literally?"* "No, but close enough," Haldir replied stoically, taking a sudden interest in the laces of his boot. "What did he say? What did he do?" "Nothing." "Interesting," Fereveldir returned. "It appears our new Lord may not be as skittish about same gender relationships as Lord Amroth was." Haldir looked at him. "Lord Amroth was not so bad." Fereveldir chuckled. "No? Have you ever been caught in such a position by him?" "Only with Lillael, but I think he knew that I preferred males overall." "He caught you with *Lillael?* What happened?" Fereveldir asked, wide-eyed. Haldir grinned. "He said, forgive me, and closed the door." "Ah! But Lillael was female. Do you think he would have had the same reaction if it were he who walked in on you and Siddhir?" "I am not sure," Haldir replied thoughtfully. "But I am quite sure he knew about me and Tinion. He never said a word to me about that." Fereveldir laughed. "You are right! I had forgotten about Tinion. Valar knows he has never been one prone to secrecy. Well, perhaps Lord Celeborn's views are similar if not more lenient." Haldir sighed, and turned his head to the east again. "I pray that is so, because I love Siddhir. If I thought there was *ever* a chance that I could- I would bind with him in a heartbeat." ***************************** On the practice fields, Tinion and Siddhir were engaged in intense swordplay and had attracted a small crowd of onlookers that watched with keen interest. To see two of their own who were severely injured in battle not so very long ago sparring so powerfully now spurred pride in them all for their strength as a whole. Their techniques were clearly different with Tinion predominately being more on the offensive compared to Siddhir's defensive style, but both were just as effective as time and time again the sound of metal clashing against metal reverberated loudly through the mid-afternoon air. "It is hard to believe he was injured so badly," a smiling Galdor whispered to Galadriel as they watched from the shadow of a nearby Mallorn. "Yes," Galadriel replied grinning, knowing he was speaking about Tinion. "Iluvatar has blessed them both. Siddhir was badly wounded as well." Galdor raised an eyebrow. "Truly? Amazing! You would not know it to look at either one of them now." "For which I am eternally grateful," Galadriel remarked, her eyes twinkling as she turned to watch her warriors again. **************************** Haldir and Fereveldir looked down from their perch in the Mallorn at the sound of a familiar whistle. Orolonn and Dinendal peered up at them. "My, how the time has passed," Fereveldir commented as both he and Haldir stood and descended from their posts. "That is because you chattered the entire time away," Haldir chuckled as they dropped to the ground. He nodded to both Orolonn and Dinendal. Fereveldir laughed. "I cannot help it. I am in mighty good spirits today. *Mae Govannen, melloneamin."* [well met, my friends] "*Mae Govannen,"* Dinendal responded. Orolonn smiled and nodded, turning to Haldir. "The children are awake and have just eaten." "*Hannon lle.* [thank you] I will pick them up on my way home," Haldir replied. They exchanged a few more pleasantries, then Orolonn and Dinendal took up their posts in the Mallorn as Fereveldir and Haldir strolled away towards home. ************************** Applause rang out over the practice field as Siddhir offered a hand to Tinion and pulled him up from the ground. "I am going to have to sharpen my skills, *mellon.* [friend] You almost had me there," Siddhir grinned. Tinion smiled. "Ah, to be so close." "Very close indeed," Galdor hummed against Tinion's neck. Siddhir laughed. Tinion spun around; and his startled expression gave way to a broad smile. "It is good to see you." "Not half as good as it is to see *you,* *lirimaer,"* [lovely one] Galdor whispered. Siddhir touched Galdor's shoulder in greeting, and smiled at Tinion. "Thank you for the exercise. I will see you later." Tinion bowed. "Thank *you."* Siddhir chuckled and strolled over to Anyriand and Nilfalath, who were amongst those watching from the sidelines. "Would either of you care to spar with me for awhile?" Siddhir asked. Anyriand smiled and shook his head. Siddhir turned to Nilfalath with a twinkle in his eye. "How about you, *mellon?"* [friend] Nilfalath laughed. "Oh, I think not. I shant give you to opportunity to annihilate me for what happened with Lord Celeborn." Siddhir flashed a brilliant smile. "What makes you think I would do that? It is Haldir who abhors gossipmongers, not I." Nilfalath grinned. "'Tis not gossip to speak of that which is *true.* Besides, I am certainly no match for you having never bested Tinion with a sword myself. If you wish hone your skills, you should spar with the best. Why do you not seek out Haldir? I would think him a far better choice." "Haldir is not available. Besides, I have seen you wield a blade, *meldir.* [friend] You give yourself far too little credit," Siddhir replied cunningly. Anyriand chuckled. "Hmm, be that as it may, I believe I will pass up the opportunity," Nilfalath returned, looking over Siddhir's shoulder. "You really should ask Haldir. It seems he is available after all. Haldir!" he called out. Siddhir turned to see Haldir strolling with Orophin and Rumil near the edge of the practice fields. He turned at the sound of his name, and moved towards them. Siddhir turned back to Nilfalath. "You have managed to worm you way out of this one, *mellonamin,* [my friend] but rest assured we will meet on the fields one day," Siddhir laughed. Nilfalath winked. "To that I hold no doubt." Haldir nodded to everyone as he approached, stopping near Nilfalath. "You summoned me?" "Yes. Siddhir wants to hone his skills, and I think that would best be served sparring with you, Captain." "Is that so?" Haldir replied, gazing at Siddhir. "I saw Tinion with Galdor on the way here and was told you were quite masterful on the field." "That remains to be seen in my opinion. Tinion almost had me a few times," Siddhir replied. Haldir chuckled. "Are you serious? That is interesting. I know he is quite the aggressive swordsman, but I always thought you were quicker. Mayhap you are just stiff from your injuries." Siddhir smiled. "I think not. Tinion's injuries were *far* worse than mine. It did not slow him down a bit. So, will you spar with me?" Orophin looked up at Haldir and pulled on his arm. "No, brother, please do not fight Siddhir." Everyone looked down at Orophin, bewildered. "We would only be practising, Oro. It would not be a real fight," Siddhir explained, kneeling to lift Rumil from the ground. "Do you promise?" Orophin asked. "Of course," Siddhir answered, kneeling again with Rumil to look Orophin in the eyes. "Sparring amongst ourselves helps to make us all better warriors, and we would never *really* hurt each other." "All right," Orophin replied. "But you cannot get mad at each other again either." Siddhir blinked, and gazed up at Haldir. The he returned his eyes to Orophin. "That will not happen. This I promise you." "I believe you," Orophin answered, with a bright smile. Siddhir kissed Rumil, who giggled and placed his hand across Siddhir's face while Nilfalath and Anyriand laughed as they looked on. Haldir kneeled down to Orophin. "You will look after Rumil for me?" "Yes, brother," Orophin replied. Siddhir handed Rumil to him. "Very well, Siddhir. I will spar with you," Haldir announced. Siddhir smiled, and held his arm out for Haldir to pass before him. "Age before beauty, *melamin."* [my love] Haldir snickered, and started to walk by him. Suddenly he stopped and turned around. "Can I win, Oro?" he asked with a confident smile. Orophin looked at him. "Yes, brother, you can win." Haldir winked at Siddhir and waved him on. "Come forth, *amin malthen mathor."* [my golden warrior] ******************** "Galdor has returned. I have just left him," Galadriel informed Celeborn. "I'd wager Tinion was glad to see him," Celeborn chuckled. Galadriel smiled. "I am sure." "It seems Haldir and Siddhir are quite taken with one another as well. Did you know this?" Galadriel nodded. Celeborn looked at her. "How do you feel about it?" "I care not. If they are happy, I am happy for them," Galadriel replied. Celeborn stood. "I remember Amroth commenting once on the penchant towards male relationships in Lorien more so than any other realm. It disturbed him somewhat." "Does it disturb you?" Celeborn thought a moment. "No, I cannot say that it does. I suppose I agree with you as far as that goes. If they are happy, then so be it. I could never begrudge anyone happiness- in whatever form it may come." Galadriel smiled, and embraced him. "Is that why you teased them a few weeks ago?" Celeborn laughed. "You know about that?" Galadriel kissed him. "I know *all,* *A'maelamin, *[my beloved] and I am pleased to hear you say that, because I am certain our Haldir is in love with Siddhir." "How do you know?" Galadriel's azure eyes sparkled. "It is in his eyes, *melamin. [my love] The window to Haldir's soul is in his eyes." Celeborn gave her a squeeze. "I shall remember that. Now, I think I will take a stroll down to the practice fields. You tell me Siddhir and Tinion are sparring there?" "They were done when I left. Now that Galdor is here, I do not suppose Tinion will be sparring anymore." "Except with Galdor perhaps," Celeborn chuckled. Galadriel nodded and smiled. "They both fought amazingly well having been injured so recently, but I sense a strong strive for perfection from Siddhir. Perhaps he is still there." Celeborn held out his arm. "Then we shall return. Remember we still have yet to name a Marchwarden." ************************* "You are quite determined, I will give you that," Haldir remarked, thwarting another offensive strike from Siddhir. Siddhir smiled. "And you are quite stealthy for an elf of your age and size. But, I am ready for you." "So it would seem," Haldir returned, retreating from another wide swing of Siddhir's blade. Celeborn and Galadriel stepped up quietly behind Orophin and Rumil. Galadriel kneeled to hug them both and take Rumil into her arms as she watched the spectacle unfold. Strike after strike, it appeared the two warriors' strengths were evenly matched. Galadriel noticed that while Siddhir was sparring with Tinion, he had taken a more defensive stance against Tinion's offensive, but with Haldir he was clearly more on the offence. She raised an eyebrow, curious at the seemingly defensive stance Haldir appeared to be taking. She had seen him wield a blade before and his attack was much more offensive- even *more* so than Tinion in many respects. She wondered briefly if he was reserved now because of his feelings for Siddhir, which were clearly evident to her. The crowd grew larger as the sparring went on. Many had come in from the common, foregoing their afternoon meal to be able to witness the spectacle that was taking place on the practice field. Others that had been sparring near them on the field ceased their efforts and moved in to watch from the sidelines. Neither warrior seemed to tire, as they matched each other strike for strike. Sparks flickered briefly when steel met steel with each deadly caress of their swords. "You move swiftly despite your injury," Haldir whispered when they became close. Siddhir smiled. "Do you fear I am swift enough to best you?" "Possibly," Haldir replied. "Do not take pity on me Haldir, for I am injured no longer. I wish for you to give me only your very best, because I am about to give you mine." "As you wish," Haldir replied, rapidly fending off a flurry of strikes by Siddhir and backing away as Siddhir continued moving pressingly forward. He could not see what lay behind him, but Siddhir's eyes told him he was about to be cornered. Suddenly and without warning, Haldir charged forward and unleashed a torrent of forceful, offensive strikes that stunned Siddhir with its fury. Siddhir hesitated, although recovering quickly- but not quick enough. Haldir's blade was fast at his throat. Applause broke out all along the practice field. Haldir's lips curled into a smile. "Do you yield?" Siddhir nodded. Haldir removed his sword from against Siddhir's neck and bowed. "You are a worthy opponent, *lirimaer."* [lovely one] Siddhir exhaled and grinned, bowing as well. "As are you, *aratoamin.* [my champion] You were just lying in wait for me, were you not?" Haldir grinned. "Possibly." Siddhir laughed as they strolled off the field towards Orophin and Rumil. Both were surprised to see Celeborn and Galadriel waiting there with them. They nodded with respect as the crowd started to disperse. "Well done. That was absolutely a brilliant display of swordsmanship. I commend you both," Celeborn stated. "*Hannon lle,"* [thank you] Siddhir and Haldir answered in unison. "I think perhaps we will take the children for a few hours and let you both get some rest," Galadriel announced with a twinkle in her cerulean eyes. Haldir looked at her. "Thank you, my Lady. I will come for them a little later." He hugged Orophin and then Rumil, as did Siddhir, and then they slowly strolled away from the practice field together. Celeborn and Galadriel watched them go. Galadriel took Orophin's hand as Celeborn lifted Rumil up into his arms. "Absolutely brilliant," Celeborn whispered, as they turned and left. *************************** Siddhir and Haldir arrived at Haldir's talan ten minutes later and went inside. Both removed their weapons and placed them on top of the large trunk in the bedroom. Siddhir looked at him with weary eyes. "Are you as tired as I am?" he asked. Haldir smiled and held out his hand to him. "Definitely." Siddhir took his hand and Haldir led him to the bed. They climbed into it together and Haldir pulled him close into his arms. Within moments, they were both asleep. TWENTY TWO "Oro, do not take him too far," Haldir called out to his likewise pale-haired sibling. "I won't brother," Orophin called back, holding Rumil's hand. "We are just going to gather shells." "Do not take him *in* the water either. You cannot handle him alone," Haldir added. "Yes, brother." Siddhir chuckled, as he lay sprawled out on the grass with his head on Haldir's lap watching the retreating children. "You worry far too much, *melamin.* [my love] Oro would never let anything happen to Ru. You should give credit where credit is due." "I *do* give him credit, which is why I am allowing him to take him off without me in the first place. But, I do know how impulsive Rumil can be. I just want Orophin to be aware and take that into consideration," Haldir replied. Siddhir turned his head to look up at him. "You love them so much. I can see it in your eyes. It is as if they were your own." Haldir's lips curled slowly into a smile as he watched his brothers gathering shells from a distance away. "I feel as if they *are* my own. They are everything to me. I never want them to know the loneliness of not having someone who loves them in their lives to care for them." "You are doing a wonderful job, *melamin.* [my love] never doubt yourself on that," Siddhir commented, pulling Haldir's face down for a kiss. ******************************** "So, we are in agreement?" Celeborn asked. Galadriel smiled. "We are." "Do you think there will be any backlash? I know how it might look to some," Celeborn reasoned. Galadriel sighed. "I would hope not. I think we know our warriors well enough. I am almost certain that most would agree with our choice." "I am inclined to agree. But I am also curious, so why do we not just ask them?" Galadriel's eyes twinkled. "You are so wicked, *A'maelamin."* [my beloved] Celeborn laughed. "We will announce our decision tonight regardless. But first we will have an elaborate feast in the common upon which I will give each warrior a chance to choose whom they think deserves the position of Marchwarden." Galadriel hugged him. "That sounds lovely." Celeborn kissed her and winked. "I have long been looking for an occasion to break out my wine stocks. Tonight shall be perfect opportunity. I shall make sure everyone is informed." ******************************* "Siddhir?" Haldir whispered. "Hmm?" "I was thinking, whilst you are lying here all comfortable, why do I not do your braids for you?" Siddhir opened his eyes to turn and look up at him with a wide grin. "It will drive you mad until you can see my braids properly done, will it not?" Haldir laughed. "I would not say *that,* but I *would* like to see them done at least *once."* "If it would make you happy, very well," Siddhir chuckled, sitting up. Haldir smiled. "I have not a brush with me, but I think I can do well enough with my hands." he undid Siddhir's loose misshapen braids and ran his fingers through his silky golden hair. Siddhir closed his eyes. "That feels nice. If I were one prone to conformity, I would have you do this more often. It is quite relaxing." Haldir smiled, and continued combing through the long blond locks with his fingers. When he was satisfied that it was clear of all snarls, he began to braid. ****************************** "Fereveldir, come forth," Celeborn called. "Yes, my Lord?" The sentinel replied, bowing before him. "I would like you to inform Haldir and all those who dwell nearest him of the feast in the common this eve." "Very well, my Lord," Fereveldir responded. "Is there anything else I might do?" "No, thank you. That will be all. Orolonn is helping as well. I will inform the rest myself." "Very good, my Lord. I shall go about it now," Fereveldir replied, bowing again before he set out into the wood. ********************************** "All done," Haldir said, with a satisfied grin. "Turn round so that I may look at you." Siddhir did as he was told. Haldir smiled. "You are simply ravishing, *mir nin."* [my treasure] Siddhir chuckled. "You mean I was not ravishing before?" Haldir pulled him in for a kiss. "You are ravishing *always.* And now that you have indulged me, I shall not ask it of you again." Siddhir kissed him. "It is a small price to pay to see that wonderful smile of yours." Haldir winked, then looked around and froze. Orophin and Rumil were nowhere to be seen. "Elbereth! Where are they?" "The children?" Siddhir questioned looking in the direction of Haldir's gaze. "They cannot be far." "Orophin!" Haldir called out, slightly annoyed. There was no response. Startled now, Haldir jumped to his feet. Siddhir joined him. "Worry not, *lirimaer.* [lovely one] I am sure they are all right. They are probably just- wait…" Siddhir cautioned, cocking his head slightly as if he heard something. Then he smiled. "They *are* playing. They are hiding, and they want us to come and find them." Haldir frowned. "How do you know that?" Siddhir raised an eyebrow. "Forgive me, I forgot. Very well, we will find them- and when we do, I will tan Orophin's hide for scaring the daylights out of me." "Right," Siddhir chuckled as they moved off towards the riverbank. ******************************* Tinion closed the door to his talan and slipped back into bed beside Galdor. "It seems we are having a gathering in the common this eve. I know not why." Galdor smiled. "Mayhap it will be a festive occasion." Tinion looked at him. "Is it why you have come?" "Nay. I came simply because I missed you, and I would have come sooner had I known you were injured so badly. I regret very much not being here for you." Tinion smiled. "But you are here now." "I am," Galdor whispered, running his fingers through Tinion's flaxen hair and lowering him down onto the bed. ******************************* "They hide well, *melamin.* My love] I cannot see nor hear them," Siddhir remarked. Haldir frowned. "Nor can I, and I do not like this." Siddhir chuckled. "Relax, Haldir. It is but only a game. We will find them." They searched all along the beach with no sign of them. Subsequently they moved back into the forest searching the limbs of the trees above them. Finally, Haldir spotted Orophin, who could not control his laughter. Siddhir laughed as well. "You are found, mischievous one. Come down now," Haldir ordered. Orophin descended slowly from the branches with a wide grin plastered on his face. Haldir looked down at him. "*Where* is Rumil?" "He is hiding brother, I cannot tell," Orophin replied. Siddhir's eyes combed the surrounding Mallorns. "I do not see him up there." "He had better *not* be up there. He cannot climb," Haldir snapped, eyeing Orophin. "He has a good hiding place brother. He cannot get hurt," Orophin explained with wide eyes. Siddhir looked at Haldir, and then placed an arm around Orophin's shoulders. "I believe you. We will find him. Are we close?" Orophin smiled. "Yes." "Well then, if he is not up high- he must be low," Siddhir reasoned aloud. Orophin giggled. "Come, Haldir. Let us go this way," Siddhir suggested. Haldir followed them, stopping every now and then to look behind a shrub or base of a tree. Ahead, Siddhir suddenly stopped walking, and froze. He turned back to Haldir, a wide grin softening his already comely features. "Elbereth!" he whistled, and then started to laugh. "What? Have you found him?" Haldir questioned. "Oh yes. My gift has allowed me to see his position, and he is perfectly fine, I assure you. But, I cannot tell you however, for that would not be fair. You shall have to find him on your own, or yield and pronounce Rumil the winner," Siddhir chuckled. Haldir frowned. "I pronounce him the winner *now.* I want him to come out." Orophin laughed and jumped up and down. "You win, Rumil! Brother gives up! You win! Come out now," he called out. Not twenty paces away, Rumil pulled himself up from the soil he had buried himself in. Siddhir joined in Orophin's laughter, while Haldir stood there open-mouthed with wonder as the dirt covered toddler ran to him. "Da-dir! Dir-ty! Me win!" Rumil giggled. Haldir exhaled with relief and shook his head. Finally, he had to laugh. Rumil was a sight covered in dirt from head to toe. He picked him up from the ground. *"Ed' I' ear ar' elene, pen-pigen!* [by the sea and stars, tiny one] Look at you! We will have to scrub you for hours to get you clean!" Haldir chuckled. "Rumil wins!" Orophin shouted. "Ru win!" the toddler repeated, holding his small arms up in the air within Haldir's grasp. Siddhir smiled. "You must admit defeat, *melamin."* [my love] "All right, it is so. Rumil wins," Haldir announced happily, forgetting his prior annoyance at the children's disappearance. "Now, let us go about getting you clean." ************************************ Fereveldir found them by the river. He smiled brightly as he neared the four of them splashing playfully in the water. "Group bathing today, eh Haldir?" he teased good-naturedly. Haldir laughed. "Rumil was very dirty, and we had to see him clean." Fereveldir smirked. "I see. Well, far be it from me to interfere with this merry washing of bodies, but I have come to bring you word of tonight's gathering in the common. All are expected to attend, by orders of Lord Celeborn." "Do you know why we have been called together?" Siddhir asked. Fereveldir blinked, recognizing his voice. "Siddhir? Valar, is that you? I did not recognize you!" Haldir burst out in light laughter. Siddhir smiled. "Surely you jest, *meldir.* [friend] I am sure I am just as ravishing as always. Now, tell me, *whom* else would you think was bathing along with Haldir and his brothers naked as the day he was born? Give me his name, so that I might throttle him forthwith." Fereveldir laughed. "Forgive me, even a soldier taken aback such as myself *really* knows full well that no one else would ever have that privilege. You alone hold that honour." "It had best be so," Siddhir retorted, shooting a warning glance at Haldir. Then he winked and smiled. "We will be there," Haldir called out. "I trust it will be the usual meeting time?" "It is indeed. I must be going now. I have a few others to inform. Enjoy your baths. I will see you later," Fereveldir chuckled, shaking his head and waving at them as he turned and left. Haldir swam closer to Siddhir. "I knew not how jealous you could be, *nin bain.*" [my beauty] "No more than you, *melamin.* [my love] Come; Rumil is quite wrinkled now. I would dare say he is more than clean enough," Siddhir winked, taking Rumil in his arms and carrying him to shore. Haldir grinned and followed lazily with Orophin. TWENTY THREE The common's eating area was packed almost to capacity when Haldir and Siddhir arrived with Orophin and Rumil. The long wooden tables were laden with platters of every feast worthy food imaginable; pheasant, quail, sweetbread, stew, vegetables, dried fruits and even venison along with many opened and flowing casks of wine. Haldir gazed around in awe at the display, for such excess was rarely seen, even at the tables of Kings. They found Fereveldir, Tinion and Galdor sitting at a table at which Orolonn and Aranel were also seated. They moved slowly through the throng to join them, with Orophin and Rumil in tow, greeting friends along the way. Haldir kept Rumil on his lap as he seated himself, while Siddhir and Orophin sat beside him. "My, Siddhir, you are looking *quite* stunning this afternoon," Tinion remarked, eyeing him with large blue eyes. "Is he not, Galdor?" Galdor smiled. "That he is, *melamin."* [my love] Siddhir grinned. "Why, Tinion, if Galdor were not beside you, I would say you were flirting with me outright." "If Galdor were not here, I *would* be flirting with you outright. So shamelessly in fact, that your lover would doubtless see fit to skin me alive for my brazen lack of discretion." Laughter rang out all around the table. Smiling widely, even Haldir could not resist Tinion's crude remarks. "He is so wonderfully vocal, is he not?" he asked of no one in particular, and then he turned to Tinion. "Just be cautioned as to my brother's green ears, *mellonamin."* [my friend] "That is why I am being light in my observations," Tinion murmured. " Surely you realize that I can be *far* more explicit." "Take my word for that," Galdor laughed, squeezing Tinion's shoulder. "It is a pity Lord Elrond is not around to witness this auspicious occasion," Fereveldir commented with a grin. Siddhir threw up his hands. "Enjoy yourselves, one and all. Ogle me as much as you like now and remember it, for I will not keep this look forever!" Haldir raised his goblet that Fereveldir had filled. "Let us drink to the eye treat Siddhir has bestowed upon us this day, for long will it be long ere we see it again!" "Here, here," Siddhir agreed, laughing as they all touched goblets. ********************************* "Surely you do not mean to ask them *all,* my love," Galadriel questioned as they strolled casually towards the common. "I would if I could, but no- that would take far too much time. I will only ask the soldiers themselves." Galadriel frowned slightly. *"A'maelamin,* [my beloved] even *that* would take quite some time." Celeborn blinked, looked at her and then laughed. "Oh, dear heart, you are quite right! I meant only the captains." Galadriel smiled. "That is much more sensible." "Indeed," Celeborn agreed, as they arrived at the mouth of the common. "I will do so forthwith, by calling them over one by one. I wish to be done of all ceremony quickly, so the spirits may flow freely upon its conclusion." *************************** All gathered in the common grew quiet as the Lord and Lady entered. Celeborn held up his hand. "Please my brethren, as you were. It will soon be known the reason for this cheerful gathering. In the meantime, eat hearty and enjoy yourselves. Elviondel, come forth if you will." The tall lanky sentinel rose, surprise crossing his features. He quickly made way to Celeborn. "I wonder what that is about," Ferevelder whispered. "I know not. Look, he is writing something," Tinion replied. "Nilfalath," Celeborn called next. After him, Calaglin and Dinendal were also called. Haldir turned back to the others at the table. "It seems as if all the captains are being called." "This is most confusing," Fereveldir remarked, right before he was called. Siddhir watched him go. "I su "I think it is likely," Haldir replied. Haldir and Tinion were called next, and finally it was Siddhir's turn. He moved quickly to the table at which his Lord and Lady sat, and bowed. "Yes, my Lord?" "Ah, Siddhir. You look very… different today," Celeborn commented. Galadriel smiled. "Yes, my Lord," Siddhir answered. "Hmm, well- at any rate, I would like to pose to you a question." "Yes, my Lord?" "If it were your task to appoint one of your brethren Marchwarden, whom would you choose? Take this parchment and write the name of your choice." Siddhir wrote his choice down quickly and without hesitation, Celeborn noted, as they all had. He found that to be quite intriguing. Siddhir handed the parchment back to him. "Is that all, my Lord?" "Yes, Siddhir. *Hannon lle.* [thank you] You may return to your friends now, Celeborn answered. Siddhir bowed and turned to go. "Oh, Siddhir?" Galadriel called out. Siddhir turned back quickly. "Yes, my Lady?" Her sky blue eyes twinkled as she smiled at him. "Your new look becomes you, however short its duration." Siddhir grinned and bowed. *"Hannon lle, Arwenamin." *[thank you, my Lady] Smiling to himself, he made his way back to the others. Celeborn chuckled and turned to Galadriel. "Now, let us see what our captains think." ****************************** Fereveldir watched Celeborn and Galadriel curiously. "Do you suppose he asked us all the same question?" "I would wager so," Orolonn replied. "He called all captains. I would think it meant something. Our Lord usually entertains a very direct manner." "I agree. So, is anyone here going to reveal what he was asked?" Fereveldir inquired with a wicked grin. "I think we will all find out soon enough, *mellonamin.*[my friend] So relax your overly curious nature. Orolonn is right, our Lord is always direct. The fact that we are having a celebration is a certain sign that they have already made up their minds. I think what he is doing now only serves to satisfy his curiosity," Haldir explained. "Pooh! You are always so serious, Haldir. Here, have more wine. You need to lighten your mood," Fereveldir returned. Siddhir winked. "His mood is light enough for me, *meldir."* [friend] Everyone laughed. ****************************** "Is this not interesting? You were right, *A'maelamin," *[my beloved] Celeborn whispered as he opened the last of the captain's votes. Galadriel smiled. "It is good to know that we are on the same rapport as our charge." "It is indeed. I wager you know as well as I who wrote this one," Celeborn remarked, handing one of the pieces of parchment to her. Galadriel smiled and nodded. "Haldir, of course." "Of course," Celeborn replied with a chuckle. "Well, I think it is time to continue, for I am craving a hearty meal and good wine." he stood and held out his arms. All fell silent. "Greetings, blessed kin of Lorien. I am sure you are wondering why you were all called upon, and why we are having a celebration this day." Several nods and murmurs rose throughout the horde. Siddhir smiled and grasped Haldir's hand, leaning into him to whisper in his ear. "Congratulations, *Cano Nya."* [my commander] Haldir blinked and turned to him. "What say you? I am not- " Siddhir's smile broadened. "Yes… you are." "Well, I will keep it from you no longer. Through much time and very careful consideration, we have chosen from amongst you the Elf that will hold the position of Marchwarden. I am also very happy to say that this Elf's comrades seem to be in complete accordance with our choice," Celeborn continued. Haldir's eyes widened, and slowly his eyes left Siddhir's and moved towards Celeborn. "Haldir, come forth," Celeborn beckoned. Applause broke out throughout the crowd. "You won, brother!" Orophin exclaimed, hugging him. Sensing Orophin's excitement, Rumil bounced up and down in his seat. "Da! Win!" Haldir grabbed both of his brothers and kissed them, gazed lovingly at Siddhir for a moment, and then rose and walked briskly through the standing and applauding group over to Celeborn. He bowed. "My Lord," he responded breathlessly. Celeborn grinned. "You have done extremely well, *nin ion.* [my son] You have toiled long and hard and you have excelled, despite having other responsibilities that could have distracted you thus. It is our pleasure to bestow the position of Marchwarden upon you." "Many thanks, my Lord and Lady. I will do my very best not to disappoint you," Haldir vowed. "I am certain that you will," Galadriel replied, passing a scarlet cloak to Celeborn, who rose and draped it across Haldir's shoulders. Then he brought forth a gleaming sword of magnificent Elven craftsmanship from its sheath and presented that to Haldir as well. Haldir felt the weight of the steel in his hands as he admired it. "*Hannon lle.* [thank you] It feels wonderful." "You are most welcome," Celeborn replied, handing him the sheath. Haldir sheathed the sword. "I am honoured that you would choose me for the position." "I would have you know that your comrades chose you as well. Not that we had not already made up our minds, but to know our choice was the same as that of your peers, makes us positive that it was the right one. There is a bow for you as well. You will find that in your quarters," Celeborn informed him, with a proud smile. Haldir bowed. "Again, many thanks, my Lord and Lady." "You are welcome, *nin ion,"* [my son] Celeborn replied. He turned and filled a goblet from a cask sitting on his table, passed it to Haldir, and then filled his own and lifted it while turning to the horde of jovial Elves before him. "My brethren, to Haldir- Marchwarden of Lorien." Everyone in attendance lifted their goblets and toasted Haldir's commission. Haldir touched goblets with Celeborn and Galadriel, then turned to the crowed raised his cup and bowed. The common exploded with more applause. "Now, good friends- enjoy yourselves! This is a celebration!" Celeborn boomed happily. The group cheered in kind, raising goblets and laughing merrily. Celeborn took Haldir's hand and led him slightly away. "You are to choose your first and second in command. You may have some time to ponder it, and inform us when you have reached your decision," Celeborn stated. "Begging your pardon my Lord, I need not ponder it. I know whom I would appoint," Haldir replied. Celeborn raised an eyebrow. "Very well. Let it be known, then." "I would appoint Siddhir as my first, and Tinion as my second." Celeborn nodded. "Wise choices. I would advise you only of but one thing. Siddhir is a valiant warrior, this is true. My wife and I think so, and we know you do as well. But, we have not forgotten the attack on Siddhir and Elrond. What was done to them was specific, and although we know not for what reason *exactly*- we *are* sure it is because they can See. We are convinced that those who do not want peace are plotting. Their attack can come at any time, whether it be soon, or not for a hundred or more years… but, we are sure that the darkness is brewing, and that is why they tried to eliminate any possible insight we may have as to their plans. Siddhir is marked because of his gift, and my counsel is to make sure that either Tinion or yourself is with him at all times, regardless of his position." Haldir nodded. "I understand completely my Lord." Celeborn smiled. "Good. I will inform the Lady Galadriel of your choices and of my counsel. Now, go back to your friends and enjoy yourself this night." Haldir smiled and they parted. Celeborn took his place again beside Galadriel, and Haldir returning to his table to accept the embraces and congratulatory greetings from everyone seated there, and those who had made their way over to them. After Haldir embraced his brothers again, Siddhir grasped his hand, smiling as he met Haldir's dancing grey eyes. "*Amin mela lle,* [ I love you] and I care not who knows it." "I think the wine has loosed his lips, Captain," Tinion chuckled, holding up his goblet. Everyone laughed. Haldir grinned, looking deeply into his lover's dark eyes. Those who surrounded him could not know of the *other* things Siddhir was saying to him that he heard only in his head. He winked at him with smiling eyes, and silently mouthed a reply. "Soon." They continued enjoying the merriment of the occasion, laughing and sipping wine as they ate and conversed, listening to the songs of their kin that burst forth every now and then from their joy. Everyone seated with Haldir burst out in joyous laughter as they looked upon Rumil's round face covered in blueberry juice as he demolished a slice of pie before him, humming like there was no tomorrow. Aranel giggled and cleaned the toddler up with a napkin while leaning in closer to Haldir. "I will look after them if you and Siddhir would like to be alone for a time," she whispered. Haldir smiled, and kissed her on the forehead. "You are most kind." The beautiful golden-haired elf maid smiled in return. "Orolonn is having a grand time. I am sure we will stay quite awhile longer. We can keep them overnight or drop them off when we leave if you wish." "You may drop them off. I greatly appreciate this," Haldir replied. "No matter. Now go; enjoy some quiet time with your love." Haldir rose, said his farewells to the others, took Siddhir's hand and they strolled happily away into the forest beyond. Celeborn winked at Galadriel as they watched them go. ****************************** Haldir kicked the door shut when he and Siddhir slipped into his talan and pulled him quickly into his embrace, covering the honey-haired sentinel's mouth with his own. Siddhir smiled brightly when the kiss was over, his dark eyes darker still with desire as he gently let the tips of his fingers travel lightly across the contours of his beloved's fair face. "I have kept my promise to Orophin, and for that I am content." Haldir chuckled. "What did you promise him?" "I promised that I would see to it that you would smile much more often," Siddhir answered with a gentle grin. Haldir could not help from smiling again. "Look," Siddhir said, spotting the bow and quiver lying on the table beyond them. Haldir turned around and went over to it. He lifted and examined it thoroughly. "It is magnificent," he whispered. "I agree," Siddhir replied, taking it from him and placing it carefully back on the table. "And you will have time later to relish it, but *our* time is short. So now, *cano nya,* [my commander] I shall make both your heart and body content this night," he took Haldir's hand and lead him to the bedroom. They quickly rid each other of their clothing and fell onto the bed. Haldir pulled Siddhir close, pinning him underneath him with a leg casually thrown across the hips of his lithe body. He gazed deep into his ebony eyes and tenderly pushed aside stray tendrils of his golden hair with his fingertips. "Have you any idea how very much I love you? he whispered. Siddhir smiled, and softly touched his lips to Haldir's while holding his gaze. "Yes, my love. You need not say the words, for I can feel your love running through me like the surging currents of the Nimrodel; in which I am perfectly willing to drown." "A fine poet you would make *lirimaer,"* [lovely one] Haldir replied with a smile before caressing the hollow of Siddhir's neck with soft kisses. TWENTY FOUR The years passed for the most part without major incident. Outside of intermittent skirmishes with Orcs a few leagues off the borders of Mirkwood and Lothlorien upon routine patrols, the Elven realms basked in the warmth of peace- although always watchful, for none were foolish enough to believe it would last forever. In Lothlorien, time saw Orophin come of age looking uncannily like his older brother Haldir- and Rumil, the youngest, sprouted up quickly to be tall, lean and well muscled. Another young elf called Legandir quickly became Rumil's closest friend. The two of them were quite inseparable and often ruled by mischief. Occasionally they managed to coerce Orophin into their grand schemes much to Haldir's chagrin. The brothers were overjoyed to see their eldest brother become so happy and content as the years progressed. Haldir and Siddhir's relationship had blossomed greatly- so much that there were times that even without the gift of sight his lover possessed, he could anticipate his every want and need before he spoke of them. Friends from Rivendell visited Lothlorien from time to time, and all were elated so see Siddhir happier than he'd ever been since the death of his erstwhile lover, Gil Galad. Around mid-day on a bright and sunny afternoon, Haldir returned from patrol with his charge. The journey had been uneventful, but tiring nonetheless. After dismissing his tend and instructing Tinion for the evening watch, he saw Siddhir to the talan he shared with Elviondel. They kissed briefly before he strolled wearily to the talan he shared with Orophin and Rumil, eager to succumb to a long, much needed rest. He entered his talan and immediately felt that something was very different. His brothers were not there, but he knew they were most likely on the practice fields at this time of day, for both were training eagerly for places within the Galadhrim. He looked around. Things had been shifted from their usual positions. With a furrowed brow he went cautiously into the bedroom. To both his surprise and confusion, there were two smaller beds stationed in the place where his one very large bed had been. He wondered if he was so tired that he had blindly stumbled upon the wrong talan, but before he could ponder the question any further, there came a soft knock on the door. He walked over quickly to answer it, and much to his astonishment, the Lady Galadriel stood smiling on the other side. He bowed. "My Lady." "It is good to have you back, *nin ion.* [my son] I know you must be weary, but I bid you to walk with me. Just for a short time," Galadriel replied. Haldir blinked. "Of course, my Lady. I will just rid myself of my arms and be right with you." "No, Haldir. Bring your weapons." "Um, very well," Haldir answered, slightly taken aback. He was weary yes, but never weary enough to refuse a request from Galadriel. He stepped out of the talan and joined her. Upon reaching the ground again, they strolled leisurely side by side deeper into the forest, eventually coming upon and taking the obscure path that led to Caras Galadon. Haldir was perplexed as to why his Lady would come seeking him at his talan herself instead of sending a messenger, but he didn't ask. He just walked quietly beside her, informing her of the events of the last months patrol and answering any questions she posed to him. As they rounded a turn in the path, Haldir suddenly crossed in front of her, holding his arm back to keep her behind him, his eyes darting all around and up into the trees apprehensively. "Is something amiss?" Galadriel questioned, rather calmly given the situation, Haldir noted. "My Lady, something is not right. I have taken this road many times. I could travel it if I were blind. This talan… was *not* here before," Haldir whispered cautiously, looking up into a large Mallorn ahead of them. Galadriel smiled, and placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.* "Uuma dela, nin ion,* [don't worry, my son] you are right. It was not here before. It was built whilst you were away." Haldir turned to her, relaxed now, but still bewildered. *"Mankoi?"* [why] "Because we thought it was long past time that the Marchwarden of Lorien had his own private quarters." Haldir blinked, looked up at the talan again and then back at her. Galadriel's sweet laughter echoed through the forest. "Yes, Haldir, you heard me right. The talan is *yours.* Enjoy it, *nin ion."* [my son] she stood on her toes to kiss him on the cheek. *"H-Hannon lle,"* [thank you] Haldir stuttered. Galadriel grinned and placed a soft hand to his cheek. "You need not walk with me any longer, for we have reached the destination I summoned you for. You are weary; go now and rest comfortably in your own bed." She squeezed his shoulder gently and sauntered off down the road, humming an ancient Elven tune. Haldir looked up at the talan again. It looked large, much larger than the one he shared with Orophin and Rumil. Curiosity getting the better of him, he moved to the ladder and climbed up to the entrance. Taking a deep breath he opened the door. It was just as spacious as he had imagined. It contained two rooms still, but definitely far larger than his previous one. As he looked around, he noticed that all of his belongings were already inside, and there were a few new additions, such as the table and chairs in the outer room. He strolled into the bedroom to find his bed placed neatly between two night tables. His desk was on one side of the room and his trunk was on the other. He removed his weapons and placed them where he normally would, then he sat down on the bed and pulled off his boots. Smiling and comfortable now, he fell back onto the bed with a content sigh. Within moments, sleep took him. ******************************* "The patrol has returned. I wonder if your brother has noticed the change," Legandir chuckled, taking a seat at the table in Orophin and Rumil's talan and helping himself to a pear. "He is most likely in his new talan and sleeping by now," Orophin replied, closing the door. "We should find him and tease him," Rumil suggested. Orophin frowned. "No, Ru. That is not a good idea. Let him sleep." Rumil frowned. "You are no fun anymore, brother." Orophin took a strawberry from the bowl on the table and popped it in his mouth. "I beg to differ, *pen-neth.* [young one] I can be a great deal of fun when the mood arises. I just believe that disturbing him now would not be wise. You know how crotchety he becomes when awakened before he needs to be, and besides, if we were to be away on patrol for a month, I am certain that we would be eager to come home to the privacy of our own beds as well." "If we ever get to be on patrol- I do not think trainer Lothraenil likes us much," Rumil countered. "I do not think he is very fond of me either," Legandir comiserated. Orophin sighed. "I was hoping you didn't notice, Ru. I have had the same feeling as of late, and I thought it was my only imagination run astray. But, we *must*continue to train if we ever hope to be accepted as part of the Galadhrim, so I suppose we will have to endure." Legandir stood. "Well, I had best be going. We have to be on the fields quite early on the morrow, and it is already dusk." "See you tomorrow," Rumil replied. Legandir nodded to them both and left the talan. "Now, let me see what we will be eating," Orophin murmured. Rumil smiled. "I am beginning to miss Hal more and more. You are not the best cook, brother." Orophin laughed. "Truth be known, I am fully aware of that. We will give Hal some time, but after that, I intend for us *both* to be at his door daily come dinnertime." Rumil joined his brother in laughter and helped him dish up the food. ****************************** Haldir turned over in his sleep and awakened with a start in the small hours of the morning. He was alone in his bed, and it felt strange. His bed felt even larger than it was without Orophin and Rumil in it beside him. He sighed heavily and sat up, torn between two emotions. It felt good to have his own space; but at the same time he had to admit that he missed his brothers- even if they *did* kick him in the ribs and elbow him in the head more often than he cared to remember. He was not used to sleeping alone. He rose and went to the window. It was still quite dark, and very quiet save for the clicking sounds of night insects. It would be several hours before Lorien rose with the call of the birds. He looked down at the two paths dimly lit by lanterns below his talan and wondered if Siddhir was awake. Convinced that he would not be able to sleep any longer without someone in his bed, he dressed quickly and left his talan. ************************** "I do not know if this is a good idea, Elviondel. You share a talan as well as I," Calaglin whispered when they reached the landing. "Yes, but you said Dinendal was a light sleeper. Siddhir is not. Besides he just returned from patrol and even more weary than usual. A cannon could go off in here and he would not notice," Elviondel assured him. "But what if for some unknown reason he *does* wake?" Elviondel chuckled. "He would not care. Trust me." "But he outranks us now. He is second in command," Calaglin reasoned. "So? He position has not changed who he is." he looked at him. "Have you changed your mind?" "N-no," Calaglin stammered. "Not really." Elviondel smiled. "Well, I am glad to hear that, considering it was *you* who asked *me* to show you the pleasures of being with one of your own kind." Calaglin sighed. "I did indeed, and I am ready." "Good," Elviondel replied, carefully opening the door. "After you, *lirimaer."* [lovely one] **************************** It was indeed a lovely night, Haldir thought, as he casually strolled along the path. It was pleasantly cool, and a gentle breeze blew through his hair as he turned off and took the trail that would lead to Siddhir's talan. He hoped Siddhir would answer the door as he wondered briefly about waking Elviondel- but the need to have Siddhir beside him now was too strong for him to care. If it did in fact happen, he would simply apologize to the sentinel and take his love back with him. He approached the ladder and started to climb. **************************** They had both reached their release and lay in each other's arms, content in the aftermath of their lovemaking. Elviondel smiled and caresses the tip of Calaglin's slightly upturned nose with his fingers. "That was wonderful, *nin bain,* [my beauty] Elviondel whispered. "After we have re-gained our strength, we will reverse positions. You need to experience every pleasure available to you." Calaglin smiled. "You mean there is more?" then he stiffened. "Did you hear that? Someone is at your door!" Elviondel listened with a frown, looking quickly over at Siddhir, still fast asleep. It came again, a soft knock. So soft, that none but an Elf could hear. He climbed out of bed and pulled on his leggings. Calaglin groaned and pulled the sheets up to his chin. "Do not worry, I will answer it," Elviondel whispered. He tiptoed over to the door and carefully pulled it ajar. To his shock and consternation, the Marchwarden was on the other side. His mouth dropped open in horror. "Captain, is-is something amiss?" he stammered, extremely uncomfortable. Haldir held up his hand. "No, sentinel. Forgive me my rudeness for knocking upon your door at this hour. I was wondering if by chance Siddhir might be awake? I would very much like to see him," Haldir explained. "Um, he is sleeping, but I could rouse him if you like," Elviondel replied. "Would you? I would greatly appreciate it. I will wait here." "Certainly," Elviondel answered, leaving the door as it was. The large room was dark save for the light of the moon, and he carefully and quietly walked to the far side of the room where Siddhir lay sleeping. He touched him on the shoulder. "Siddhir?" "Um?" "Haldir is here to see you, and it is not yet daybreak," Elviondel informed him. *"Hannon lle," *[thank you] Siddhir replied, pulling himself up from the bed. Rubbing his eyes along the way, he went to the door in his nightshirt. Elviondel returned to his bed, and placed a calming hand on Calaglin's arm through the sheets that now covered him completely. Haldir grinned when he saw Siddhir, for his hair was now more disheveled than usual. "Forgive me, *melamin.* [my love] I could not sleep, and I would very much like to have you with me this night." Siddhir smiled. "I am not surprised, because I have heard of your new quarters. You are not used to sleeping alone are you?" Haldir chuckled. "I never thought that I would ever admit it, but yes, it is true. Will you come with me?" "Of course I will. Please wait until I dress. I would not think it wise for me to travel through the wood in naught but my nightshirt." "I will wait if it takes forever." Siddhir smiled. "It will only take a minute." he left Haldir and strolled over to the chair beside his bed. Quickly dressing in the clothing he had carelessly thrown across the back of it, he bade farewell to Elviondel and left the talan with Haldir. "It is all right, *lirimaer.* [lovely one] Siddhir has left with our Captain, and we have the talan to ourselves now," Elviondel said cheerfully. "I thought I would fade dead away!" Calaglin exclaimed. Elviondel smiled and kissed him. "You are not the only one, *nin bain,* [my beauty] but we worried for naught. Our Captain did not see us, and Siddhir didn't even notice. So, we can continue now what we were doing before we were so rudely interrupted. What say you?" ********************************** Haldir let Siddhir pass and closed the door behind them as they entered his talan. Siddhir looked around and smiled. "Very nice, Marchwarden." Haldir grinned. "It had everything I could ever need except a warm body for my bed- and now I have that, so I am quite content." Siddhir kissed him. "I will warm your bed anytime. Lead me to it." Haldir took his hand and led him into the bedroom. They pulled off their clothes simultaneously and climbed in between the sheets. "I thought you slept in a nightshirt," Haldir commented, moving his hand sensuously over Siddhir's naked hip. "Not when I am with you. What would be the point?" Haldir laughed. "Well, I am glad to know that. I must admit I wondered how you slept sharing a talan with Elviondel. I wore one as well, and I shared mine only with my brothers. Do you think Elviondel will be angry with me for taking you away?" Siddhir laughed. "Oh, I would say he was quite *relieved* you took me away. Now he will not have to stifle the sounds of his ecstasy." Haldir blinked. "He was not alone?" "No, and he thinks I am unaware- so we will leave it that way." "Who was he with?" Haldir asked, curious. "Calaglin." *"Calaglin?* That is surprising." "Why?" "Because I always thought Calaglin preferred maidens- although I also thought he had eyes for Dinendal as well at one time. I even thought Elviondel and Nilfalath were together," Haldir remarked. Siddhir smiled. "I cannot say much about Calaglin and Dinendal, but Elviondel and Nilfalath are much like Tinion and Galdor, truth be known- *and* even *you* in the old days." Haldir laughed. "I deserved that." Siddhir grinned and pulled him close. "The sun will be rising in a few hours. Would you care to couple repeatedly until it does?" Haldir kissed him, taking note of Siddhir's tired eyes. "I would like nothing better, but you are still weary, *melamin,* [my love] and admittedly, so am I. We are not on duty tomorrow, so what say you that we just sleep now? When we wake, I will have you for breakfast- and possibly every *other* meal for the day." TWENTY FIVE Haldir shifted and opened his eyes to find Siddhir staring thoughtfully at him. He smiled and pulled him in closer for a kiss. "How long have you been awake?" "Not long. Only about an hour, I believe," Siddhir replied. Haldir yawned. "What time of day is it? I feel as if I have slept for an eternity." "Nearly noon, I would think." "No matter," Haldir whispered, gently moving a finger across Siddhir's collar bone. "We will have a late breakfast. You make an excellent sleeping companion, *melamin.* [my love]I think I may have to keep you." Siddhir smiled. "Is that so?" "Absolutely," Haldir chuckled. "When *you* sleep, you stay put. There is no kicking, nor elbowing me in the head. I could become quite used to that." Siddhir chuckled. "I would wager." Haldir stretched. "Yes, I think Elviondel will have to seek another to share that talan with," he mused aloud, while positioning his body so that he was half on top of him. "After all, I *am* Marchwarden now, and I must have an ample amount of rest so that I might have the strength to be at my very best whilst performing my duties; and as I cannot see doing that *without* you sleeping beside me, I will have to insist that you concur with me on this matter." Siddhir laughed and wrapped his arms around him, his hands slowly sliding up and down the length of his backside. "And how would you explain our new living arrangements to our Lord and Lady?" "If asked, I will simply tell them that having you with me is my desire," Haldir answered matter of factly. Siddhir blinked, surprised. "You *would?* I thought you favoured being clandestine when it comes to these matters." "Siddhir, I love you, and it is as you said to me; I really care not who knows it. Besides, as surreptitious as I *try* to be most times, someone always seems to have information concerning my affairs. It seems my trysts make for good conversation over the cooking fires, or so I have been told. So in light of that, I have decided not to go out of my way denying anything anymore." Siddhir chuckled and squeezed his thigh. "To your credit, I might add. I think if you denied me now, I would simply have to go out of *my* way to make you live to regret it." Haldir laughed, and kissed him. "That is no idle threat, I am sure." Siddhir winked, and without warning, quickly rose and flipped Haldir down onto the bed, reversing their positions. "Never has a truer word been spoken, *mir nin.* [my treasure] You are *mine,* and mine alone. No other shall have you as long as I draw breath, and they will taste my wrath if they even *gaze* upon you any longer than is to my taste." he raised Haldir's arms and pinned them down with the weight of his own, emphasizing his words. "And now, *lirimaer,* [lovely one] you are *my* prisoner." "There is no place I would rather be," Haldir whispered, gazing deep into Siddhir's ebony eyes. Siddhir winked. "Is that so? You would consent to laying dormant for my every whim?" Haldir smiled. "To a point." A sparkle twinkled in Siddhir's dark eyes, and he threw back his head in laughter. "Oh, worry not, *Aratoamin, * [my champion] I alone am the sheath in this union." Haldir grinned sheepishly realizing that Siddhir had just read his thoughts. "Well, I have to admit that you *are* full of surprises, *mir nin."* [my treasure] Siddhir slithered forward a bit and leaned in to kiss him. "There are no surprises as far as that goes. You caught my eye in the first place because I felt you to be the dominating sort." "Truly? Tell me, would it surprise you to know that I am not totally chaste in that area?" "We all have to learn our preferences at some point, so no, I am not at all surprised. I am also quite content with the dynamics of our relationship, so far be it from me to deny you what you so obviously do best." Haldir laughed and grabbed him, reversing their positions again so that Siddhir was underneath him. "You are quite correct, *mir nin.* [my treasure] I desire now to ride you to exhaustion. Will you comply?" Siddhir wrapped his legs around Haldir's hips, pressing their bodies closer together and sighing deeply as Haldir began to nibble gently on the sensitive tip of his ear. "Far be it from me to refuse a direct order from the Marchwarden as well." "Hmmm," Haldir murmured, as he made a trail of soft kisses from Siddhir's ear to the hollow of his neck. "For which you will be greatly rewarded, sentinel. This I promise you." Their bodies warm and erect with unleashed passion, they made love uncovered and uninhibited on top of the crisp white sheets that lined Haldir's bed, oblivious to anything everything but each other. Their stamina equally matched, time passed wonderfully slow in their battle for fulfillment. Finally, through slit eyes and a sweat drenched brow, Haldir brought Siddhir to completion and with great ardour, found his own eternity within him. ********************** Rumil turned back in shock as Orophin slammed the door closed, and hastily removed his weapons. "You are angry, brother. I thought you said we have to endure," Rumil whispered. "Forget what I said! He has but once more to debase either one of us and I will see fit to knock him on his surreptitious *backside!* We have done *nothing* to deserve the treatment we are receiving from him, and I will not tolerate it another *minute!"* Orophin exclaimed, fuming as he sat down hard in a chair. Rumil's eyes widened. "But you might get into trouble, Oro. I don't think our Lord and Lady will be happy, and neither will Hal. I am not quite of age yet. Who will I have to look after me then?" Orophin's expression softened immediately at the look on his youngest brother's face. Rising, he moved quickly over to him and pulled him into a warm embrace. "Forgive me, *pen-neth.* [young one] I was not my intention to startle you. Worry not, I will always be here to look after you, and so will Hal. We would never leave you to the fate of others as long as either of us draws breath. Always remember that." Rumil looked up at him with wary eyes. "Are you feeling better now?" Orophin thin lips stretched into a slightly forced grin. "I am much better now. Do not fret." "Can we go and see him? I am hungry, and I wager he is cooking something," Rumil queried. Orophin chuckled. "I think that is a very good idea. I have worked up quite the appetite, and I really do not feel the urge to try and cook. Come; let us be off." ************************ Dressed now, Haldir playfully grabbed Siddhir from behind and pulled him back down to the bed on top of him, eliciting light laughter from the fair elf. "I have changed my mind and do not wish for you to leave. You are my prisoner remember? You must do as I say," Haldir quipped. "You bade me to share your quarters, and if I do, I must retrieve my belongings from my former talan. Is that not correct?" Siddhir chuckled. *"Cormamin niuve tenna' tae lea lle au,'"* [My heart shall weep until it sees thee again] Haldir whispered into his ear, squeezing him a final time before releasing him. Siddhir turned over to face him.* "Uuma dela, Amin khiluva lle a' gurtha ar' thar." *[don't worry, I will follow you to death and beyond] Haldir kissed him. "Elbereth! How very happy you make me." Siddhir gazed long into Haldir's serene grey eyes. "No more than you make*me, * *A'maelamin.* [my beloved] he pulled himself up from his body and the bed. "Now I must go. The sooner I leave, will be the sooner I return; for good." Haldir sat up with a bright smile. "I cannot take exception with *that* reasoning, so off with you. I will have our breakfast ready when you return." "All the better," Siddhir replied with a wink, before slipping out the door. ***************************** "Do you think he has risen yet?" Rumil asked, as they strolled along the path towards Caras Galadon. "If he hasn't, we will wake him just as we always have," Orophin chucked in response. Rumil laughed. "I bet he misses us anyway. It must be awful quiet staying alone after you have always shared a talan with others." "I am sure it is, but if I know our brother, I am certain he will find ample company." As if on cue, Siddhir rounded the corner of the path, meeting them. Orophin turned to Rumil with a wide grin. "See what I mean?" *"Mae Govannen,* [well met] you two," Siddhir greeted with a smile. *"Mae Govannen* Siddhir," the brothers chorused in return. "I believe your brother is about to make breakfast. Were you on your way to visit with him?" "We are," Rumil answered. "You were with him?" "Yes. I am going to my talan for a bit, but I will return," Siddhir replied, gazing curiously at Orophin, suddenly sensing a struggle within him that belied the pleasant smile etched on his face. "Orophin, is there something amiss? You seem to be a little…upset." "He was angry earlier, but we are going to see Hal so that he can cheer up," Rumil replied. "What has upset you, Oro?" Siddhir asked. Orophin paused for a moment and then shrugged. "It is best forgotten, Siddhir. If I wish to become a member of the Galadhrim, I need to be able to deflect certain pressures and persevere regardless." Siddhir raised an eyebrow. "Hmm, well- I would say that would be true in *most* cases, but sometimes there *are* valid reasons for one to *be* upset. I will hold you no longer. Go now to your brother, for I am certain he will be delighted to see you both. I will join you later." Orophin watched Siddhir leave until Rumil tugged at him, and they continued their trek to Haldir's talan. **************************** Siddhir could barely contain his anger as he veered off the path that would take him to his talan and instead took one that would lead him to the practice fields. He did not know whether his gift was strengthening or that Orophin's dismay was so overwhelming that it was easier to read. If what Orophin felt was true, something had to be done about it. Lothraenil was in the midst of training four young elves, watching from the sidelines as they sparred with each other in pairs. Siddhir watched for a few moments before gathering his composure and walking briskly across the field to meet him. Lothraenil saw him before he reached his position, and urged the trainees to move a little further down the field so that he might speak privately. He did not appear to be amused; however Siddhir cared little what he felt. "Lothraenil, I have come about your treatment of Orophin and Rumil on these fields, and I believe the issue should be addressed straight away," Siddhir stated blatantly. Lothraenil frowned. "Have either of them registered a complaint against me?" "No, they have not- but you know that already, I am sure." "Then I fail to see why it is an issue at all." Siddhir smirked. "I am *also* sure that you know I need no such admission from their lips. I am more than aware what has transpired, and I bid you to treat them fairly, or you will see me *again,* and the next time I will *not* be so courteous. Have I made myself clear?" Lothraenil nodded. "Good. I will go about my business then," Siddhir replied, turning on his heel. Abruptly, he turned back to face the trainer again, his eyes growing darker, and his fair features twisting into a mask of barely restrained impatience as he moved forward quickly to stare him straight in the eyes. "Take heed, Lothraenil, because I will say this to you but only once. Whom I choose to share my bed with is none of your concern. What *should* concern you- because you forget yourself, is that I am *second* in command- and I was appointed that position because I *earned* it, just as Haldir has *earned* his position as Marchwarden. Whatever your trouble is with him, you should address it *to* him or to our Lord and Lady- and *not* his brothers. Reflect upon this as well; considering that you have never bested Haldir, myself or even *Tinion* on the practice fields, I find your consternation for Haldir's position *severely* misplaced. In fact, I think you should consider yourself fortunate in the *extreme* that you have even retained your position as *trainer.* Good day." Siddhir stormed off without looking back. ************************************ Rumil rubbed his belly. "I am quite full now. Thank you, brother." Haldir chuckled. "You are quite welcome, Ru. How about you, Oro?" Orophin held up his hand. "I could not eat another thing." "Very well," Haldir replied, taking his seat again. "So, have you missed us, brother? Your new talan is very big," Rumil questioned. Haldir smiled. "I missed you the very first night. So much so, I could not sleep. There was no one here to kick me." Both brothers laughed at the comment. "You should ask Siddhir to stay with you. There is more than enough room here," Orophin suggested, looking around. "I have," Haldir replied. "Good for you, brother. I am glad you are not alone," Orophin remarked. "We saw him. Where did he go? He said he would be back to join us," Rumil questioned. "He left to retrieve his belongings. I am sure he will return shortly," Haldir replied. "So, how has your training been going? Tell me everything." Orophin kicked Rumil under the table. "Everything is going well, brother." Haldir smiled. "Good. Are you working with sword or bow?" "Swords," Rumil answered. "Good. Remember now, if you ever need any help- do not hesitate to ask, all right?" "Brother, we will be fine. You are busy now being Marchwarden," Orophin commented. Haldir frowned. "Listen to me, the both of you. If it is at *all* possible, I will *make* myself available to you. I never want you to feel as if you cannot come to me for anything that you need. Do you understand me?" "Yes, brother," Rumil answered. Orophin smiled and nodded. Shortly after, the talan door opened and Siddhir entered with Elviondel, who helped him carry in his belongings. Siddhir continued to the bedroom while Elviondel stayed behind with the others. *"Quel andune,"* [good afternoon] Elviondel greeted. *"Quel andune,* Elviondel. Would you care to join us? There is plenty to share," Haldir asked. "Thank you, captain, but I have already eaten. I was just helping Siddhir. May I ask if you have yet named anyone to share my talan?" Eliviondel queried. "Why do you not ask *Calaglin?"* Rumil teased. Orophin kicked him under the table again, but everyone laughed, including Elviondel. "Your head is not very large, but you know much, *pen-neth,"* [young one] Elviondel chuckled, ruffling Rumil's hair. Haldir smiled and shook his head. "Rumil is fast becoming quite the gossipmonger. Nay, sentinel. I think that would be a decision best left to you. Choose whoever you would like." Elviondel bowed. "Thank you, Captain, and now that Siddhir is settled, I will take my leave. Good day, all." "Thanks again, Elviondel," Siddhir called out from the bedroom. "You're most welcome," he called back. Then he nodded to everyone else. *"Namarie."* [farewell] Elviondel closed the door behind him, and Siddhir joined Haldir and his brothers at the table. Haldir made him a plate and handed it to him. Siddhir winked, and kissed him on the cheek. Rumil laughed. "You do not have to be so cautious, Siddhir. We know*everything."* "Oh, you *do,* do you?" Siddhir replied, putting down his fork. "Well, in *that* case…" Siddhir reached out and pulled a stunned Haldir back in his chair and covered his mouth with his own. Haldir blinked rapidly, but was smiling broadly when the kiss was over. Orophin and Rumil burst out in joyous laughter. "Forgive me, for I could not restrain myself any longer. Your brother's exquisiteness takes control of me beyond all reasoning- but since you know *everything,* I shant even bother to try to conceal my love and lust for him any more than is absolutely necessary," Siddhir remarked with a wink. Orophin gazed at Rumil, whom he was certain felt the same joy as himself when he met his eyes. All they had ever wanted for their brother had finally come to fruition, and now Siddhir's love completed it. It was evident in the rare but radiant smile spread wide across his fair face- and it made their hearts glad. TWENTY SIX "Brother, will you tell us about our parents?" Rumil questioned, as they sat watching the sun set beneath the massive Mallorn that held Haldir and Siddhir's talan. "I know not what else you would wish to hear. We were attacked by Orcs; I tried to help them, but they told me instead to run. I obeyed them, and ran as fast as I could dragging both of you with me. I was very young, Ru. Far younger than you even. I do not remember much else- as I have told you," Haldir answered, solemnly. "I do not wish to hear about their deaths, brother. I wish to hear again what they looked like. You still remember, do you not? Do we look at all like them?" Haldir glanced at Siddhir, then back at Rumil with a smile. "Of course I remember that- and yes, from my recollection, we all favour them in different ways." Orophin looked up then, curious. "How so, brother?" "Well, you and I have our mother's hair colour whilst Ru has our father's, but you and Ru have mother's beautiful blue eyes. I alone have father's grey ones." "What else do you remember, brother?" Rumil asked. "Our Father was tall, strong and largely built. I would say I have taken after him in that respect. Oro, I think you will as well. But Ru, you remind me most of our mother. She was tall too, but small boned, as you appear to be- but be not fooled. Mother was quite strong. I remember her gathering logs for cooking fires whilst father was away sometimes, and she never made more than one trip- even when I was hanging on to her skirttails." Everyone laughed at the remark. "Do we share personalities with them? Orophin inquired next. Haldir shifted position slightly, leaning in closer to Siddhir. "I really have no idea, I am afraid. I have heard our Lord say once that I reminded him of father, but that is all I know. He never said how. Perhaps you might ask him one day. Outside of Lord Amroth, he would be the only one who might remember them. They were close, it has been said." "I might at that," Orophin replied. "Might I venture a guess?" Siddhir asked. Haldir grinned. "Certainly." "I too have heard tales when Lord Amroth dwelt here. Granted I was young as well, but from what I remember- I would say that you are a lot like your father, Haldir. I would also say that Rumil is much like your mother, and Oro- I think you are a cross betwixt them both." Haldir smiled and squeezed Siddhir's shoulder. "That is as good of a guess as any, I would think." Orophin looked at them. "I do not possess the gift, but somehow I feel he is right." "Me too," Rumil added. "Can I ask something else of you, brother?" Orophin queried. "Has this been earmarked the night for questions?" Haldir chuckled. "I – I was just wondering…" "It is quite all right, Oro. Ask what you will," Haldir encouraged him. "Have you ever been smitten with females? No offence, Siddhir." Siddhir laughed heartily. "None taken." Haldir smiled. "A few, very long ago." "What happened?" "I found that I much prefer males," Haldir replied simply. "Do you think that we will prefer males as well? We are brothers after all," Rumil remarked. Haldir chuckled. "Preferences like that have nothing to do with blood relation, Ru. You and Oro may well prefer females, and of course that is up to you. What I do, and who I am with is naught a rulebook for you to abide by." "Truly?" Haldir laughed aloud. "Of course! I would never tell you who to love or not love! Surely you do not believe me to be *that* much of a tyrant?" Orophin smiled. "No, brother." "Well, I am glad we cleared *that* up," Haldir answered. "Tell me, Oro. Do you have someone in mind? I think you have not asked me that question for naught." Orophin blushed. "Perhaps, I know not for sure yet." "Oro's in *love!"* Rumil teased. Orophin face flushed red and he frowned. "I did not say that, Ru. Stop mocking me." "You're blushing! You *are* in love!" Rumil repeated, hurriedly rising to his feet when Orophin made a move towards him. He took off running with Orophin close behind. Haldir shook his head as he watched them. Siddhir laughed. "Who do you think it is?" "I have no idea, but I will not taunt him about it. Rumil is doing enough of that. He will tell us when he is ready," Haldir replied. "Oh, to be young and carefree, *melamin,"* [my love] Siddhir murmured, positioning himself snugly under Haldir's outstretched arm. Haldir smiled thoughtfully, absent-mindedly twirling a lock of Siddhir's silky hair between his fingers as he watched Orophin playfully tackle a laughing Rumil down to the ground. "We're not that old yet, *lirimaer.* [lovely one] Stamina wise, we could give either one of them a run any day." "True," Siddhir chuckled in response. Orophin and Rumil found their way back to them and plopped down on the grass. "Oro is quick, but I am quicker," Rumil joked. "That is because you had a head start. Next time, we will start together to see who is best in a sprint," Orophin interjected. "Do not bother, for *I* am the best," Haldir quipped, winking at Siddhir and removing a burr from his hair. "Head start or no, I could catch all of you." Siddhir sat up from Haldir's embrace. "Have my ears deceived me, or did you say *all* of us?" Haldir grinned wolfishly. "I did." Siddhir stood and looked down at Orophin and Rumil. "I know not about you two, but I do not intend to let him get away with that claim. He will have to prove it to me." "Prove what?" Fereveldir asked, suddenly from behind them. "Haldir says that he could best us all in a sprint," Siddhir replied. Fereveldir laughed. "And I suppose you intend to challenge him." "I certainly do," Siddhir answered. "Me too," Rumil added, standing. Orophin looked from Fereveldir to Haldir with narrow eyes as he slowly rose to his feet. "He knows something we do not, doesn't he, brother?" Haldir shrugged innocently. "I know not what you mean, Oro." Fereveldir chuckled. "I will enjoy this from here. I am not quite up to sprinting today." "All right, who shall be first? Or would you all like to run together?" Haldir chuckled. Siddhir raised an eyebrow. "In that case, I think we will go together." "Very well, since that is your preference- all I must do is take you down one by one. Agreed?" Haldir inquired. "Agreed," the three chimed in unison. Well then, off with you!" Siddhir, Orophin and Rumil took off like a shot and started running across the meadow. They did not see Haldir turn and wink at Fereveldir before he set out after them. ******************************** Galadriel stood alone on the railed platform of their large talan looking out into the peaceful night. Many a star twinkled brilliantly in the twilight, and a slight breeze caressed her as it blew almost playfully through her long golden tresses. She smiled as she gazed thoughtfully at the shimmering Mallorns of her land, casting their own light high above the dim lanterns that lit the pathways through the forest below. She sighed contentedly. Lorien was indeed a wonderful place. A few moments later she felt strong hands on her shoulders, and she leaned back into their embrace. "I thought I would find you out here," Celeborn whispered against her neck, placing a soft kiss there. "Is it not a wonderful evening, *A'maelamin?"* [my beloved] "It is indeed, but are you troubled *melamin?"* [my love] Galadriel turned to face him with a cheerful smile. "I know I dwell here sometimes when I am disturbed, but that is not the case this night. I am simply enjoying the splendor of Lorien." "Our lands are like no other; this is true," Celeborn agreed. "Oh, how I wish that it could last forever," Galadriel sighed. Celeborn looked at her, concerned. "Bad tidings from the mirror?" "No, but even so- as long as evil dwells, however dormant it may be at the present, there is always fear of its awakening." Celeborn sighed deeply. "Of course you are right, but let us not lend *all* of our thoughts this lovely night upon such unpleasantness." Galadriel smiled and hugged him. "As usual, you complete me *melamin.* [my love] Celeborn smiled and took her soft alabaster hand in his. "And you, *mir nin,* [my treasure] complete me. Come; I have prepared your favourite bedtime tea." Galadriel kissed him, and together they went back inside their talan. ********************************* "Have I hurt you, *lirimaer?* [lovely one] Forgive me. It was not my intention," Haldir apologized, breathing heavily after taking Siddhir down. Siddhir coughed. "Nay, you have just knocked the wind from me. You have surprised me yet again, *melamin.* [my love] I did not believe you would catch me. You are indeed the best sprinter." Haldir chuckled, rose and helped to pull Siddhir up. "You were the hardest to catch, though. If I am not diligent, you will surely best me one day." "I *intend* to best you one day, *nin bain,* [my beauty] so be on your guard." Haldir smiled and kissed him. "I have been warned." Together they strolled back to where Rumil and Orophin waited with a grinning Fereveldir. Orophin looked at Feleveldir. "Our brother is larger and older than all of us. How was he able to catch us? Tell me, Fereveldir. I know you know." Fereveldir grinned and looked at Haldir, who nodded. "Oro, your brother was much like Siddhir when he was younger- still is, in a lot of respects, I might add." He winked at Haldir. "He was always trying to be the best by constantly challenging the very best. If there were half league sprints, he would run *two* for practice, *and*… he would run *uphill*- which is by *far* much harder to do, for it takes a toll upon the muscles in your legs. When you can do *that* without becoming labored, a flat level run is child's play." Orophin and Rumil stared at their brother open-mouthed. Siddhir broke into laughter. "So *that* is why you indulge my constant challenges of you? You see yourself in me?" Haldir smiled, and pulled him close. "There are times that I do." "We must remember that, Ru," Orophin commented. "It will help us to become better warriors." Rumil nodded. "We will best him one day, brother- but now I am quite weary." Orophin smiled. "Truth be told, so am I. Being taken down from a fast run is quite strength robbing. I think we will be leaving now." Haldir moved to embrace both brothers, one in each arm. *"Quel esta."* [rest well] "We will see you for dinner tomorrow," Orophin remarked. Haldir smiled. "Of course." "I think I will walk with them, for the hour has grown late." Fereveldir said, nodding to Haldir and Siddhir. *"Quel du, melloneamin."* [good night, my friends] "*Quel du,"* Siddhir replied, taking Haldir's hand and watching them depart. He winked at Haldir as they turned and slowly started to stroll back to their talan in the deepening night. "I hope you are not weary as well *melamin,* [my love] for I have yet one *more* challenge in store for you." TWENTY SEVEN Several weeks later, Tinion stood in the harbour along with Calaglin and Dinendal as the sleek Elven ship docked. He grinned from ear to ear when Galdor stepped off the boat, accompanied by Haldir and Siddhir. "What a pleasant surprise it is to see you, *melamin.* [my love] I thought I would have to wait until I arrived to gaze upon your fair face," Tinion whispered, as Galdor approached him. "I did not want to wait," Galdor replied, winking at him and gently squeezing his shoulder as Haldir walked up to them, followed by Siddhir. "The Havens are absolutely lovely Tinion, so I must bid you aforehand to remember your rank here in Lorien, for once there you might find it hard to return," Haldir remarked. Then he turned to Calaglin and Dinendal. "The same goes for you two. You are valuable within my guard, so do not have too much fun." Siddhir laughed, noting the serious expressions on the sentinels' faces. "He is jesting, my friends. Have a wonderful leave as we did." The sentinels relaxed visibly and smiled when Haldir's lips curled into a wide grin. "Forgive me, I could not resist," Haldir chuckled. "Captain, you have an expression that could turn a calm sea into ice," Tinion joked. *"Hannon lle,*[thank you] Haldir responded with a wink. "Now begone, all of you. Have a wonderful time." The sentinels nodded with respect and followed Galdor on to the ship. Haldir and Siddhir stood watching as the ship left the port, waving to their friends as they left. When they were far enough away, Siddhir slipped his hand into Haldir's and the two slowly strolled away. Siddhir sighed. "I have never been as happy as I am this day." Haldir glanced at him and smiled, squeezing his hand. "Nor have I, *lirimaer." *[lovely one] "When will you tell our Lord and Lady?" "I will tell them when I report," Haldir replied. Siddhir blinked. "So soon? I thought you would wait awhile, as we still do not really know how they feel about our relationship." Haldir stopped walking and looked at him. "Do you *want* me to wait?" Siddhir blinked. "I did not say *that,* but-" "You are nervous," Haldir interjected. Siddhir smiled. "Some, yes." Haldir grinned. "I am stunned that you would be nervous about *anything*- much less *this,* as bold as you are, *nin bain.* [my beauty] Well, don't be. It is not like it will happen *tomorrow.* I will simply tell them of our desire to bond, and that I asked and you accepted. Of course we must wait until it is convenient for them." "Very well," Siddhir returned. Haldir placed a finger under his chin, raising it so that he might gaze into his dark eyes. "You have not changed you mind, have you?" Siddhir smiled. "Of course not. Truth be known, I cannot wait to be bound to you. I *wish* it were to be tomorrow." Haldir pulled him into a tight embrace. "As do I, *melamin."* [my love] They continued their stroll, and eventually reached the tree that held the talan they shared. Haldir turned to him again. "I will go now and check the watch, report to our Lord and Lady, and then I will return." Siddhir nodded and kissed him. "I will be here." Haldir slapped him gently on the rear as he ascended the ladder, and with a bright grin he continued on through the forest. ************************************ Orophin sighed heavily as he rose from the ground, steeling himself for unyielding, negative diatribe from trainer Lothraenil, but it did not come. Instead, the stern faced elf only nodded for him to continue sparring and moved on down the field. "Looks like we were spared this time," Legandir whispered. Orophin rolled his eyes. "I have decided not to let him get to me. I *will* be appointed to the Galadhrim, and I will not let the likes of him deter me." Legandir smiled. "That is a good attitude Oro, and one I share as well." Orophin raised his blade. "Then let us get on with it *mellon,* [friend] for I shant let you catch me unawares again." Legandir chuckled and took his stance. "Are you ready?" "Come forth," Orophin replied. Legandir took the offensive and pushed towards Orophin with swift and sweeping wide arcs that Orophin countered effectively at every pass. Their blades clashed together quickly and repeatedly as they both fought for dominance. Neither of them saw the smile on Haldir's face as he watched them from the shadow of a nearby Mallorn. After instructing his guard, Haldir decided to check in on his brothers before reporting to Celeborn and Galadriel. They were not at home, and knowing that they were most likely on the practice fields, he made a point to stop, as it was on the way to his destination. He gazed further down the field where Rumil was also sparring with an elf he did not know. He seemed to be doing well also. He turned back just in time to see Orophin disarm Legandir, and was about to applaud, when Lothraenil's loud voice boomed over the din. "Fool! That is *not* what you were taught!" Haldir's head snapped in the direction of the blatant insult, and the cords in his neck pulsed when he saw Rumil sprawled out on the grass and Lothraenil standing over him scowling with outright contempt. The elf who had been sparring with his brother stood back with a shocked expression, and out of the corner of his eye he saw a flash of mithril hair as an enraged Orophin came charging down the field- but he was faster. Before anyone realized it, Haldir had swept in amongst them like a bird of prey, his fury unleashing like a sudden storm as he grabbed Lothraenil by the throat and hurled him to the ground. "How *dare* you mock and impose your trifling prejudices upon my brother? Have you gone *mad?"* Haldir growled. Lothraenil clutched his throat, already red and bruising from the force of Haldir's grasp, and pulled himself up from the grass. "No, but you have Marchwarden- which is further testament to your unworthiness for the title you carry. How do you think our Lord and Lady will look upon your assault of me?" Haldir was not deterred. Seething, he took a step closer to the haughty elf so that he was right in his face. "Hear me, Lothraenil- and hear me well. You will not use my brothers to injure me. When it comes to them, I would face the wrath of our Lord, Lady and the Valar himself. Feel whatever you may about me, for I care not. But if you ever harm either one of them again in any fashion, you *will* see the business end of my blade. This I promise you." He turned to see Orophin helping Rumil from the ground and quickly went over to them. "Ru, are you all right?" "I- I think so," Rumil muttered. "This does not look good," Orophin commented, holding out Rumil's arm. The young elf's sleeve was stained with a seam of bright red blood. Haldir turned and glowered at the trainer, and then returned his attention again to Rumil. "Here, let me see." He took out his short knife and cut the sleeve away from Rumil's forearm. A deep gash ran underneath from his elbow almost to his wrist, and it was bleeding profusely. He cut more material from the sleeve and wiped away some of the blood to get a better look, and frowned. "This will need stitches. Oro, get him to the healer. Legandir, accompany them." "Yes, Captain," Legandir replied, moving quickly to Rumil's side. Haldir turned and once again glared at the trainer, who visibly flinched at the fire in his gaze. "He had best been cut by something in his fall and not your blade *‘ksher,* [evil one] or I will risk incurring the wrath of the Valar straight away." The elf who had been sparring with Rumil kneeled down to the grass where Rumil had fallen and rose with something in his hand. He moved quickly to where Haldir stood glaring at the trainer with his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. "Captain, I think Rumil may have landed on this," the young elf offered, holding something unseen out to him. Haldir opened his hand for the elf to drop whatever it was into it. When he did, a jagged fragment of an arrow tip lay there, glistening with Rumil's blood. He looked at the young elf and nodded. *"Hannon lle."* [thank you] The elf nodded and backed away. Haldir turned again to the trainer. "A stray arrowhead falls under the realm of negligence on your part, *trainer,"* he spat the word vehemently. "Hear me, Lothraenil; If you wish to challenge me for my position, then by all means do so. But I meant what I said; do not ever do anything untoward against either of my brothers again, because you will live to regret it." With that, Haldir spun on his heel and walked away. ********************************* "What is it, *melamin?"* [my love] Celeborn asked, as he watched a concerned expression suddenly contorted Galadriel's soft features. "Something is amiss," she whispered. "Haldir light is so strong now. He is angry, *very* angry. That is unlike him." "Perhaps I should seek him out," Celeborn offered. "No, he is due to report and will come to us. I will inquire then." "Very well," Celeborn replied, looking back to some papers on his desk. He looked up only briefly a few moments later and s the room. He knew only too well where she was headed. ******************************** "How is he?" Haldir asked the healer when he arrived. The healer smiled. "He will be fine, Haldir. It was a very nasty cut for certain, but nothing important was severed. He took quite a few stitches though, much to his dismay- but he is resting comfortably now. You may go in and see him." *"Hannon lle,"* [ thank you] Haldir replied. He strolled back to the room in which Rumil lay. Orophin and Legandir were still with him. "How are you, *pen-neth?"* [young one] Haldir greeted. "I am better now brother," Rumil returned solemnly. Haldir pulled up the chair that Legandir had vacated when he entered and sat, taking Rumil's hand. "How long has he been treating you so poorly?" Rumil glanced at Orophin, and Haldir turned his attention to Orophin as well. "This is not the first time, is it Oro?" Orophin shook his head. "Why did you not tell me of this before?" "We did not want to burden you, brother. You have a lot to do now being Marchwarden without having to look after us as well. We are no longer elflings. We both desire to be of the Galadhrim, and we know we must train hard to qualify. It is true he has been overly and unjustly harsh with us, but I thought we could put what was happening behind us and look only to our training," Orophin explained, lowering his eyes. His anger subsiding, Haldir sighed. "I never would have let him get away with harming Ru. You have to believe me," Orophin pleaded with sorrowful eyes. Haldir stood, and still holding Rumil's hand, grasped Orophin with the other. "Of course I believe you. I understand your reasoning as well, and I am sorry his contempt for me has put you both in this position." "Why does he dislike you so, brother?" Rumil questioned. Haldir pulled the chair closer to Rumil's bedside and sat again. "There are some that think our Lord and Lady have granted me a special favour because they have adopted us. He is one of them." Legandir frowned. "But that is not true, Captain! You earned your position rightfully! You have defeated *all* who have challenged you on the fields with sword *and* bow, and you have more kills in battle than any other in Lorien!" Haldir blinked in surprise and turned to face the young elf with a smile. "And you would know that how, *pen-neth?"* [young one] Legandir blushed. "Because I- I have… studied you. I wish to be like you." "It is true brother, he taught me something he knew you to do, and it is what got me into trouble with trainer Lothraenil," Rumil grinned. Haldir chuckled. "Is that so? Well then, since my style is admired so, perhaps I should be the one to train you. I will speak to our Lord and Lady about it." *"Really?"* Legandir asked with a wide smile. "Certainly," Haldir returned. "But brother, what if you become busy and cannot train us?" Orophin questioned. "Then Siddhir, Fereveldir or Tinion will train you in my absence. They are excellent warriors as well. Either way, I think it best you not return to Lothraenil's tend, for I fear you may truly witness the madman inside me should any more harm come to you," Haldir replied matter of factly. Orophin grinned. "I have never seen you so angry, brother. That is true." Haldir stood and squeezed Rumil's hand, released it and then kissed him on the forehead. "I hope you never have to witness me become that angry again. I truly am not a fair sight. *"Quel esta, pen-neth.* [rest well, young one] I will stop in and check on you again tomorrow in your talan. I am certain the healer will be releasing you soon. I must report to our Lord and Lady now." He hugged Orophin and nodded pleasantly to Legandir and left the healer's rooms. ************************ Celeborn was waiting for him when he entered the receiving room in Caras Galadon. Haldir bowed gracefully and gave him his report since returning from leave and checking in on his guard. Celeborn nodded. "All is well, then. That is good to hear. Now, tell me Haldir, how are you faring?" Haldir looked at Celeborn questionably. "I am well, my Lord. I have just returned from a wonderful leave. Why do you ask?" "Because my wife feels that something is amiss with you, and she usually is correct about these matters. At any rate, she will return shortly, and I am certain she would wish to speak with you as well. So have a seat Haldir," Celeborn answered, before he left the room and returned to his desk and papers in the adjoining one. "Yes, my Lord," Haldir replied, groaning inwardly as he sat on the divan. He wondered if his Lady knew of his altercation with Lothraenil on the practice fields and he was currently in trouble. That would not help him plead his case to be allowed to bind with Siddhir. Why did this have to happen today of all days? He asked himself. Galadriel entered the room shortly thereafter, smiling thoughtfully as she gazed upon Haldir. His anger was non existent now, and she was glad of it. His light was much dimmer while he was calm, and far easier to read. He stood and bowed low when she entered, and now stood at attention waiting for her to speak. "I am glad to see you, nin ion. [my son] You were sorely missed," Galadriel stated lovingly, almost gliding across the floor to stand by his side. *"Hannon lle, Arwenamin,"* [thank you, my Lady] Haldir replied courteously. "Sit, Haldir. I wish to have a word with you. I trust you have given your report to my husband?" "I have my Lady." "Good. Then I can address other matters," Galadriel replied softly. Haldir steeled himself. "As you wish, my Lady." *"A'maelamin,* [my beloved] I must leave you for a short time in Haldir safe and capable hands. I have some business to attend to," Celeborn announced as he entered the room again and kissed her on the cheek. He nodded then to Haldir and left. Galadriel turned back to Haldir with a smile after her twinkling cerulean eyes followed her husband out of the talan. "You very angry earlier," she started. Haldir cut her off. "My Lady, *please* forgive my outburst. I just could not-" Galadriel silenced him with a finger to his lips. "I saw what happened. You need not apologize." "I did not exhibit conduct appropriate for my position as Marchwarden. It is this that I apologize for," Haldir replied sullenly. "Oh, but I beg to differ. Given the circumstances, I deem your conduct appropriate enough. He was wrong to chastise your brothers unfairly and use *his* position as trainer to do it for no other reason than the ill will he holds towards you. He will be dealt with accordingly." Haldir sighed. "Unlike him, I wish him no ill will. I just do not want my brothers to be subjected to him any longer. I was wondering if you would grant me charge to train them instead." "Of course, but you realize you will not *always* be able to do so." "I do. When time allowed, I would call upon Siddhir, Fereveldir or Tinion to train them in my stead," Haldir explained. "I see. Well, you will work that out, I am sure." "Yes, my Lady." Galadriel smiled. "All is well now then?" "Yes, my Lady. Well, there is one other thing," Haldir murmured. "Yes, Haldir?" "Um, I am sure there is not much you do not know, my Lady. Including my- relationship with Siddhir, but I need you to know that it is far stronger than you might imagine. I love him with all of my heart, and it is my desire- and his, to bind together in our love." He took a deep breath. "Do you think it is at all possible that we could do so?" Galadriel sat back a little and gazed into his pleading grey eyes and into his very soul. The words he spoke greatly understated the depth of his feelings for Siddhir, and it warmed her heart. A soft smile tugged at the corners of her mouth as she considered him. "I must tell you Haldir, not until this very moment did I *truly* understand how very important he is to you. I must first confer with my husband of course, but I would say that yes- it is indeed very possible." She pulled him into an embrace and chuckled softly when she heard him exhale. TWENTY EIGHT Several weeks later, Siddhir smiled as he was awakened by Haldir's tight embrace. Wincing a bit, he turned so that he could look upon his face. He was still sleeping, but it appeared as if he were dreaming. Curious, he carefully placed his fingertips on Haldir's brow and closed his eyes. Concentrating deeply, he tried to see what was going on in his lover's dreams. He had tried a few times before and it had not worked, but he knew his gift was temper mental. Perhaps today he might have better luck. At first there was nothing as usual, but just as he was about to pull away it happened. A flash, then several more came all at once in his own mind, appearing and disappearing so quickly he could barely make them out. He squeezed his eyes more tightly shut and willed the images to slow. He smiled absentmindedly as a young silver haired elf came into focus. As the vision widened he could see the elf holding tight to the hand of a lovely elf maid that held another flaxen haired elfling in her free arm. She smiled, brushing a few stray strands of likewise platinum hair away from her fair face as she sat the elfling in her arms down on the grass beside the older child who immediately hugged him. When she stood again he could see she was carrying an unborn child as well. She placed both of her hands on her large belly and began to sing the loveliest lullaby in the ancient tongue. The two children below her stropped what they were doing to listen. Another image came forth that was apparently sometime later, for the two pale haired children were somewhat older, and they were sitting beside a tall, good looking elf with honey blond hair. In his arms he cradled an infant who shared his colouring and the other two children were straining to see the child over the soft white cloth it was wrapped in. The elf maid joined them soon after wearing the biggest smile as she embraced them all. Siddhir grinned, realizing now that Haldir was dreaming about his family. Another vision came of them together, picnicking out in the meadow laughing merrily. Haldir's mother held who he now knew to be Rumil while Haldir and Orophin rolled with their father in the grass. Then they both ran and their mother's light laughter followed them as her husband set out after them. Then he saw himself, that first day in the common when Haldir had turned to look at him while he sat a few tables away with Orophin and Rumil. Haldir's attraction to him then was apparent now even in his dreams. He had felt it too when their eyes met. Smiling, he removed his fingers from Haldir's brow. "Are you finished?" Haldir whispered, opening his eyes. Siddhir frowned. "How long have you been awake?" "About thirty seconds," Haldir replied with a yawn. "Tell me, what do you find so interesting about my forehead?" Siddhir grinned and hugged him. "I find every inch of you exquisite, *melamin."* [my love] Haldir raised an eyebrow. "You are very strange at times, *nin bain.* [my beauty] Never have I heard foreheads to be particularly sensual." Siddhir chuckled and kissed him. "That is because no other has a forehead like yours." Haldir smiled, and pulled him close. "What ever you say *mir nin."* [my treasure] *"Amin mela lle,"* [ I love you] Siddhir whispered into his chest. "I love you too," Haldir returned. "Now, as much as I would like to completely devour you right now, I fear I should be getting ready. Soon my eager trainees will arrive. Do you not have watch as well?" Siddhir mocked a groan. "Yes, *cano nya."* [my commander] Haldir laughed, released Siddhir and rose from the bed. Siddhir watched him as he gathered what he needed for a bath, absent mindedly licking his lips as he observed the muscles in Haldir's strongly built body rippling in the most enchanting way. Suddenly he felt the familiar pool of warmth gathering in his groin. He rose quickly and gathered his things as well. "Wait, I am coming with you," he chuckled wickedly. ********************************************** "I have to go now," Orophin said. "I have to get back before my brother awakes. We are to train with Haldir today. I will visit you again soon." The lovely she elf smiled. *"Cormamin niuve tenna' ta elea lle au'" *[my heart shall weep until it sees thee again] Orophin blushed and kissed her on the cheek. "And mine as well, *lirimaer.* *Oio naa elealla alasse."* [lovely one, ever thy sight is a joy] He smiled at her and set off into the forest. ********************************************* Siddhir sat at his post smiling contentedly, recalling his ambush of Haldir in the river and their vigorous lovemaking that ensued thereafter. He was so captivated by the vision, he did not hear Tinion approach and take his position beside him. "Hmm, I think would give a month's stipends for the thoughts you are having right now," Tinion remarked with a snigger. Siddhir blinked and focused on him. "Forgive me, my mind was elsewhere." "Apparently," Tinion returned. "How was your leave?" "Our Captain was right. I was tempted not to return," Tinion admitted cheerfully. Siddhir flashed a brilliant smile. "Truth be told, so was I. Do not tell Haldir." Tinion adjusted his position on the branch. "Worry not. I cannot give information to which I am also guilty." "How is Galdor? Did he return with you?" "No, he did not, but he is quite well, thank you," Tinion replied with a wink. Siddhir chuckled. "I would wager." He gazed out over the great divide. "I think we have company coming. Have you heard of any expected guests?" "No," Tinion replied, following Siddhir's gaze. "Friends or foes?" Siddhir stood, still watching the approaching figures on horses. There were three of them, definitely Elven and definitely from Rivendell given their dark hair colour. After a time, he smiled and returned to his place on the branch. "They are friends." "Do you know who? I cannot quite make them out yet," Tinion asked. "Anarin, Melpomaen and Golradir," Siddhir answered. "Hmm, they must be on leave. There is no business pending that I know of. Besides, if there were, Elrond would be amongst them." "That is true. It will be good to see them again. I have missed them," Siddhir returned. Tinion looked at him. "You still cannot return to Rivendell?" Siddhir lowered his eyes. "Nay, there are too many memories there." "Perfectly understandable," Tinion replied, standing. "Come; let us prepare to greet our guests." ********************************* "Rumil! Up with you! Legandir is here and you are still loafing in your bed. You know Haldir does not like us to be tardy," Orophin warned. Rumil groaned and pulled himself up into a sitting position. "How come you are so awake and cheerful Oro? You like to loaf as much as I. What were you up to?" Legandir laughed loudly in the other room. Orophin frowned. "Nevermind. Come on now, get dressed. We have not much time." Rumil swung his legs over the side of the bed and stood. "You know Oro, you are becoming more and more like Hal everyday." Orophin laughed and slapped him on the rear. "Thank you. We are going outside. You had best join us in five minutes or we will be leaving you to face his wrath alone." Legandir chuckled again as he and Oro left the talan. ************************************** Siddhir and Tinion amongst others stood waiting to greet the guests from Imladris when Haldir slipped up quietly behind them. Siddhir, suddenly alerted, whipped around to come face to face with his lover. "You surprised me," Siddhir said to him. Haldir smirked. "One surprise deserves another, don't you think?" then he laughed. Siddhir joined him. Tinion raised an eyebrow. "I am not even going to inquire as to what *that* is about." The guests from Rivendell dismounted and walked up to them, Anarin leading the way. A few other Lorien elves on watch quickly led their horses into the forest. Anarin's smile radiated kindness and genuine happiness as he gazed upon them. He embraced Siddhir warmly, and then turned to gaze at Haldir while the others were greeted by Siddhir. "Haldir, *please* tell me that your relationship with my dearest friend here has progressed past the point when I was last in these golden woods, and that I have not just idly thrown away attention from the fairest elf in all of Lorien," Anarin remarked. Haldir looked at Siddhir and they both broke into light laughter. "As a matter of fact, *meldir,* [friend] our relationship has progressed greatly. We are to be bound sometime soon," Haldir answered. "Ah! That is wonderful! I am so very happy for you," Anarin replied, cheerfully. Tinion turned to Haldir and Siddhir with a furrowed brow, and then directed his question to Haldir. "Why would you two want to do that? Your relationship is strong, why the need for such tradition?" Haldir chuckled. "I am aware of your distaste for tradition, *meldir,* [friend] but I love him deeply, and it is what is best for us." "Hmm, well, I think you are being led around by your short sword rather than your good sense," Tinion quipped. Haldir, Siddhir *and* Anarin all raised eyebrows, but they were smiling. Tinion burst into laughter. "Right. That was most *definitely* a *poor* choice of words in his case." Everyone laughed good naturedly at the remark. Haldir shook his head. "Come friends, let me show you to Caras Galadon. I am sure our Lord and Lady would love to see you and hear of all your news. I have an appointment I must attend to near there anyway." He winked at Siddhir and left with the new arrivals. ************************************* That evening, Siddhir returned to the talan to find Haldir with their dinner already prepared and waiting. He smiled and seated himself at the table. He was famished. "So, how goes the training?" Siddhir asked, as he sampled a few grapes. "It is going very well. So well in fact that I am sure it will not be long before they are good enough to be part of the Galadhrim," Haldir answered. *"Truly?* *All* of them?" "Yes, I am proud to say. It would be a great coming of age gift for Ru as well. I want to thank you for your help when I have been absent. I think our combined styles are of good use to them." "I am glad to be able to help. I love your brothers, you know that," Siddhir replied. Haldir smiled. "I do, and forgive me, but I fear I will have to ask it of you again for the morrow. I have a patrol I must lead and Fereveldir is going with me. You are not on duty, so Tinion must head the watch." Siddhir nodded and finished chewing what he was eating. "No need to explain. I would be glad to. You have but only to ask." Haldir smiled, and then stretched his limbs. "Truth be known, I am worn out. Those three are quite crafty. It takes everything I have to fend them off. One other thing; Whilst I am away, why do you not seek out our Lady and see when we are able to have our bonding ceremony? I did the asking, I think it only fair for you to see to the preparations." he winked. Siddhir smiled. "That is fair, so I will see to it. Now tell me, is my intended too weary to address an issue I might have?" Haldir looked at him. "I am never too weary for you. What issue would you like to address?" Siddhir wiped his mouth, rose and sauntered over to Haldir's side with a sly grin, his eyes growing slowly darker than normal with the passion rising in him. "Actually, *Aratoamin,* [my champion] *undressing* was more of what I had in mind." TWENTY NINE "That was fun," Rumil remarked cheerfully as he climbed from the small boat and joined Siddhir and Orophin on the shore, carrying his catch. Orophin smiled. "That is because you caught the most fish." "We will best him the next time," Siddhir interjected good naturedly. "Come, let us find a good spot to make our fire and enjoy all of Rumil's toil and trouble." The three laughed as they strolled lazily through the woods, finally settling on a small clearing not too far from the riverbank. They settled in, and in no time had a fire blazing, and the fish cooking. Orophin smiled as he gazed at Siddhir. "Thanks for taking us with you. It has been some time since we have been on the river." "I know, which is why I thought you might enjoy it-especially with your brother being away," Siddhir replied. "I miss him," Rumil admitted. Siddhir smiled and touched his shoulder. "We all do, Ru." "When will he be back?" "I am not certain. Mayhap a week or two." "Do not worry, Ru. You will always have me," Orophin assured him. Rumil smiled, served up two plates and passed one to each of them. Then he made his own. "We will eat and talk about Hal. I love hearing stories about him." Siddhir chuckled. "Oh you do? What kind of stories?" "His love life mostly," Orophin chimed in, laughing. "And anyone else's he can hear about. I am afraid my youngest brother is becoming quite the gossip." "I am not," Rumil challenged. "Oh no? All right, tell Siddhir what you want to talk about then. I know you well, *pen-neth.* [young one] You would not have brought the subject up had you not something specific on your mind," Orophin replied. Rumil laughed. "The plague on you, Oro." Orophin pulled Rumil close and gave him a tight squeeze. "I love you too, Ru." Siddhir grinned as he watched the interaction between the brothers. "It is quite all right, Ru. What did you want to ask me?" "I want to know if what I heard is true." Siddhir winked at Orophin, and then turned to Rumil. "And what have you heard?" "It has been said that you and my brother will bind together," Rumil returned. Siddhir whistled. "News certainly has wings in Lorien, does it not?" Orophin laughed, and pointed to Rumil. "It does, and he is one of them." Rumil punched Orophin playfully in the ribs. "If it were me, I would know the answer, smart one." Siddhir considered them fondly. "It is true." "I knew it!" Rumil exclaimed. "It is long overdue too." "I take it you approve?" "Gods, yes. I have never seen my brother so happy," Rumil answered. Orophin smiled, and grasped Siddhir gently on the shoulder. "And it is quite clear to both of us that it is you who makes him so. We are very happy for you." "Thank you," Siddhir replied. "When will you bind?" Rumil questioned. "I am not certain. In fact, I have to see to the arrangements with our Lady. Haldir informed her of our desire to bind, so it is up to me to see to the preparations." "I hope it is soon." "As do I," Siddhir responded with a wide grin. "Now, is there anything else you wish to know?" "Yes. Is my brother as good of a lover as it is told?" "Elbereth! Rumil! I think that *far* too personal a question to ask!" Orophin complained, embarrassed. Siddhir smiled. "It is all right, Oro. Ru does not shock me. He has always been inquisitive and refreshingly straight forward. The answer is no." "No?" Both Rumil and Orophin said at once, their eyes wide with astonishment. Siddhir threw is head back and laughed. "We do not understand," Rumil murmured. Siddhir wiped the tears from his eyes with the backs of his hands. "Forgive me, but the looks on your faces was priceless, and I simply could not resist. What I meant was, no- he is not as good as it is told. He is *better."* Orophin shook his head and grinned. "You are just as bad as he is." "I suspect that I am," Siddhir agreed, picking up his plate to eat. "It is your turn now, Ru. Entertain me with some of your tales." ******************************** Tinion saw the dark elf approaching and dropped soundlessly down from his perch amongst the branches directly in front of him. Anarin smiled, not at all disturbed. "Please forgive my intrusion, sentinel. I was wondering if you could possibly tell me where I might find Siddhir?" Tinion raised an eyebrow. "Have you not tried his talan?" "I tried what I knew to be his talan when last I was in Lorien, but I was told he no longer resides there. I even went to where I remembered Haldir's talan to be, but no one was at home." "Haldir does not reside in his former talan either. He and Siddhir now stay together in a larger talan much closer to Caras Galadon." He turned and pointed. "If you take that path, you will come upon it eventually. It is quite a distance from here, however." Anarin nodded and smiled again. "It is of no consequence. I am rather enjoying this lovely day. A long walk will do me good." Tinion nodded. "Very well. I shall get back to my business then. *Namarie."* [farewell] *"Namarie,"* Anarin replied, thinking how very fair Tinion was as he turned and walked away. Tinion watched him retreat for a few moments before quickly scaling the tree and returning to his post. *************************************** "I see nothing gets past you two. Not even the long supposed deep secrets of the wood," Siddhir remarked. "There can never *really* be secrets amongst us, I think. We are inherently a curious lot," Orophin reasoned. "It is just that *some* of us are more curious than others." Rumil frowned. "Do not single me out, brother mine- for there was many a night I have witnessed *you* lending an open ear towards the banter and bawdy talk surrounding the cooking fires." Siddhir smiled. "I suspect we have all been guilty of that at one time or another." "Tell me, Siddhir, do you know any secrets about our brother that you might tell us?" Rumil queried. Siddhir bit his lip thoughtfully. "Mayhap I do, but I wonder if telling would be good practice, now that I know how very wicked you two are." "We will not tell! We promise," Rumil spoke up. Orophin let Rumil speak for him, and he sat there with wide eyes, eagerly waiting in anticipation of Siddhir's revelation. Siddhir considered then both with a stoic face that suddenly broke into a wide grin. "All right, I suppose I might tell you just one. It is one Haldir does not know I know, although I suppose if I asked him outright, he probably would tell me. At any rate, if you spill this news anywhere past here, I will throttle you both. Agreed?" "Agreed," Orophin answered quickly. Siddhir put his plate aside and leaned forward to speak only in a whisper. "Haldir has been with my cousin." The brothers, who had leaned forward with him- now sat back, puzzled. "Your cousin? Who is your cousin?" Rumil asked, confused. Siddhir just sat there smiling. Orophin's brow furrowed as he gazed at Siddhir. "I have heard it said that you are kin to royalty, or something of the like…Lord Amroth? No, that cannot be. You are originally from Riv- oh!" his eyes widened with realization. Rumil pushed at him. "Who Oro? Who?" "Lord Elrond!" Orophin exclaimed. "Lord Elrond!" Rumil echoed in surprise. "Oh, that *is* a juicy bit of news." "Which you will keep to yourselves," Siddhir reminded them. "Of course, but how do you know that?" Rumil questioned. "You said Hal did not tell you. Lord Elrond did?" "Of course not, Ru! Can you picture *Lord Elrond* conversing upon his private affairs? He does good to talk at *all.* Siddhir's gift had to have something to do with it." Siddhir winked, and stood. "Now that we have enjoyed a good meal together and have shared several unmentionable subjects this day, I think it time for you both to take to practicing the exercises I taught you. I have to seek out our Lady and see to our arrangements, and possibly drop in on some friends- but I *will* be testing you on the morrow." Orophin poured water on the fire. "We will. Thank you, Siddhir." "You're welcome," Siddhir replied, kneeling to help clean up the remnants if their meal. Rumil waved him off. "I will clean up, Siddhir. Go, so we can know when you and our brother will be bound." Siddhir smiled. "Very well. I shall see you both later, then." Siddhir nodded and strolled away. Rumil turned to Orophin. "Elbereth! Hal has been with *Lord Elrond!* Can you believe it?" Not quite out of earshot, Siddhir chuckled and quickened his pace. ******************************************** "Enter," Elrond called out softly. Erestor peeked inside the opened door before entering. Something in Elrond's tone told him that something was amiss. He stepped quietly inside. "My Lord?" Elrond looked up at him with tired eyes from behind his massive desk. It was covered with many scattered scrolls and books. So many, that one could barely see the surface of the fine wood that lay under them. "How might I be of assistance to you, Erestor?" Elrond queried. Erestor gazed long and hard at him before pulling up a chair and seating himself. "I think it is I that should be asking *you* that question, my Lord." Elrond sighed. "Sometimes I forget that there is not much I can conceal from you, my friend." Erestor pulled a stray strand of raven coloured hair away from his brow. "There are times, such as this one… that I wish you could. Galadriel has contacted you then?" "Yes, but I knew before that," Elrond answered. Erestor stole a glance outside the nearest window. "Will you tell him?" Elrond did not respond for a few moments. "No, not unless he asks directly." Erestor smiled thinly and shook his head. "He will." "I know," Elrond replied sullenly, standing and moving slowly over to the window. THIRTY "There you are," Anarin called out happily when he spotted Siddhir as he stepped onto the road ahead of him. Siddhir stopped and turned to face him, his fair face breaking into a warm smile. "You have been searching for me, *meldir?"* [friend] "Only over the whole of Lothlorien," Anarin replied with a chuckle as he strolled up and embraced him. "Forgive me. I have changed living quarters since I last saw you. I reside with Haldir now, not too far from here," Siddhir informed him. "So I was told." "Who told you?" Siddhir inquired. "I believe his name is Tinion. He is quite the fair one too, I might add. He had these marvelously wonderful big blue eyes," Anarin replied. Siddhir chuckled. "That is Tinion, all right. I would not mess with him if I were you, *meldir.* He could prove to be hazardous to your health in the long run." "How so?" Anarin questioned, interested. Siddhir looked at him. "Well, I suppose it would depend on how serious you are about him and where you wanted it to go." Anarin smiled. "Worry not, *mellon.* [friend] I am not quite ready to become involved in anything overly serious. I am more in the mood for a dalliance or two." "Then he would work out just fine I imagine." Anarin laughed. "You think so?" "Dalliances, as you put it- are Tinion's specialty *and* his preference. He has told me so himself." Anarin winked. "Then I must seek him out when he is not on duty." Siddhir raised an eyebrow. "You surprise me, *meldir.* [friend] I had not thought you to be quite the carefree type." "Can you walk with me? Would I be keeping you from something?" Anarin asked. "Certainly- and no, you would not. I was just going to see Lady Galadriel about personal business, but I can do so later. Is something wrong?" "No, not at all. I just thought we could go and have a bite to eat together and catch up is all. I do not get to see you as often as I would like," Anarin answered as they started walking in the opposite direction. "As far as me being the carefree type, I really am not, but it seems to me that happiness with just one person takes so long to achieve sometimes. I am beginning to believe we should grab all that we can *while* we can in the meantime." "I for one certainly cannot find fault with *that* reasoning," Siddhir offered with a grin. "Tell me, where is Golradir and Melpomaen?" "Golradir I am sure is with Lord Celeborn. Melpomaen, well, I do not know. Sometimes he can be so strange and secretive. I am surprised he chose to accompany us to Lothlorien in the first place. He usually goes to the Havens when he has leave." Siddhir frowned slightly. "I know why." Anarin looked at him. "Although he thinks otherwise, I know he desires Haldir. He will be severely disappointed however, because I have no intention of giving him up; not for him- or anyone. At any rate, I am sure he is rather dismayed to find that Haldir is not here presently. He is probably sulking in his talan." Anarin's eyes grew large. "I know better than to question you, because I know well your insight- but I have firsthand news that Melpomaen rejected Haldir long ago. Why would he seek him out now? It makes no sense." Siddhir looked squarely in Anarin's puzzled eyes. "His thinking is unnatural, because he seeks to hurt Haldir in some way for his supposed arrogance, and it angers him that Haldir is indifferent to him now. But, deep within him *another* fire burns that he uses his anger as a veil to deny. He watches Haldir secretly whenever he gets the chance. I have seen it, and thus I have taken to watching *him.* By any means necessary." The reached the common and seated themselves at a table adorned with several bowls of dried fruit and lembas. Each of them made a small plate and began to eat. After a time, Anarin turned to Siddhir again. "Will you confront him?" "I have no reason to, for I am not troubled. Haldir and I love each other, and we will bind together in the near future. Melpomaen is of no consequence really, but I would be foolish not to keep him within my sight at any rate," Siddhir replied simply. "I am truly amazed by these revelations," Anarin remarked. "I had no idea." Siddhir shrugged. "Well, enough about me; let us speak about you and this new found freedom you have suddenly acquired a taste for." Anarin laughed. "Very well, what would you like to know?" Siddhir looked past Anarin and saw Tinion entering the common. His eyes focused on his friend again, and he smiled. "I am afraid we will have to continue this conversation later. As you have said, one must never waste valuable time, nor an opportune moment." he tapped Anarin on the shoulder and nodded in the direction of Tinion. Then he stood. "We shall meet again, *meldir.* [friend] Have fun." **************************************** "Finally, we are headed home," Fereveldir sighed, as he mounted his horse.
