The time was going fast and Lindir was making rounds saying farewell to friends. Thranduil gave him the time and space he needed to deal with leaving his home. He still could not believe Elrond’s reaction and how it had hurt Lindir. Thranduil wondered through the halls and found himself in the library. Walking around, looking at the books, he did not notice the other in the room. “Pleasant afternoon, King Thranduil.” Thranduil jumped at hearing the voice and quickly turned around. “Lady Celebrian, I did not see you there. How are you today?” He bowed. “I am well. Just trying to find a quiet place. What brings you here?” “I guess the same reason. I have been receiving mixed reactions to the news that Lindir is coming to Mirkwood. I admit I am trying to avoid others for a while.” Celebrian chuckled. “Lindir is loved greatly by everyone in Imladris. Many remember him when he first arrived with his parents. Others, like myself, met him later and well, as you know, he is very easy to love.” “I understand and yes, he is quite easy to love.” “Can we talk for a little while, King Thranduil?” “Please, just Thranduil.” “Very well,” Celebrian motioned to two chairs near a window and offered him a drink. “I know you care for Lindir; it is obvious when you look at him. I know Lindir is very fond of you for he has told me. I just want to make sure you understand how much we all love Lindir. I do not want him hurt, Thranduil. I worry about him being so far away from his home and knowing no one other than you. That makes him rather dependent on you, do you not think?” Thranduil thought for a moment and nodded. “I suppose it does, I had not thought of it that way. I will take care of him. He will want for nothing and I want him to be happy with me. He will be welcome to pursue any interest he has while there, music or otherwise.” “That is good to here. What if Lindir decides to return to Imladris?” Thranduil looked down at his hands and very uncharacteristically picked at his nails. “I would never want Lindir to be where he does not wish to be. I would miss him greatly, but I want him happy.” Celebrian leaned forward and took Thranduil’s hands in her own. “Be good to him, Thranduil. I feel he will need you more than either of you realize in the near future.” “Be assured, my lady. I will be there for him,” Thranduil took her hand and kissed it as he stood. “I have enjoyed meeting you. You are very gracious and wise. I do hope we will meet again for I have enjoyed my time in Imladris.” “I am sure we will see each other again, Thranduil. I have also been honored to know you.” Lindir returned to his rooms, making sure he had packed everything he needed. When he opened his door, he was shocked to see Elrond sitting on his bed. “Lord Elrond, what are you doing here?” Lindir had difficulty making eye contact. “I wished to speak to you. I wanted to apologize for my words and my reaction when you asked for leave,” he walked to stand near Lindir who was trembling. “Lindir, you have been like a son to me; you have been my student, my friend and at times, my confidante. However long you stay in Mirkwood makes no difference. Your position here remains. If and when you decide to return, you are welcomed. Imladris is now and always will be your home. I love you, pen neth.” Elrond embraced Lindir tightly, kissed his brow and left standing in his rooms not knowing what to say or do. Thranduil noticed the change in Lindir at dinner. He was smiling and more talkative, joking with Elladan and Elrohir. Thranduil was glad to see that his burden seemed less. Lindir walked to the Hall of Fire, where he sang a final time for everyone. Many tears were shed but everyone, including Elrond, seemed very happy for Lindir. Celebrian asked Lindir to speak with him. They walked out onto the balcony. “My Lindir, I will miss you so much.” Celebrian tried not to cry but did not succeed. Lindir hugged her and together they said their goodbyes and she made Lindir promise to write and let her know he was all right. Neither of them wanted to go inside with tears in their eyes so they waited until they had stopped. The problem was, they could not stop and they both began to laugh at each other. Thranduil and Elrond smiled and gave each other a look. “Should we check on them, my lord?’ Thranduil asked. Elrond chuckled. “They have been out there a long time. Let us join them, meldir.” Thranduil tried not to show his reaction to being called meldir by Elrond, but he was astounded. Elrond had said little to him and at those times, there was a less than friendly tone to his words. Now he had called him friend. No wonder Lindir is confused by Elrond, he thought. They found Lindir and Celebrian sitting on the floor of the balcony, dissolved in tears and giggles. “Is everything well, my beloved?” Elrond cautiously approached the pair. Celebrian tried to compose herself to no avail, so between giggles she and Lindir tried to explain. “Yes, my husband. You see we were…” “…we were saying our goodbyes and then we…” Lindir giggled again. “…then we started…crying and…” “…then we tried to stop and…well…” “We could not…stop crying…and then…” “…then we started laughing….and…” “…and we cannot…cannot stop…” “Lady Celebrian…are we…laughing or…crying?” Lindir could not breathe. Celebrian fell into Lindir’s lap. “I do not…know…” They were both laughing and crying and it became infectious. Thranduil covered his mouth trying to stay composed, as did Elrond. Lindir looked up at Thranduil, and at seeing the laugh he was trying to hide, he pointed and laughed harder. Thranduil gave up and joined their laughter as Elrond lost his composure. The four of them were sitting there, leaning on one another laughing, when all three Peredhil children opened the curtains to the balcony and stood there with their mouths wide open. “Nana, Ada, are you well?” Arwen asked. Elrond and Celebrian quickly straightened their faces. “Yes, Arwen. What makes you think there is something wrong?” Lindir snorted loudly and the foursome dissolved into laughter again. “Come Arwen, they have all obviously gone mad or had too much wine.” Elladan pulled his sister back. “Or both,” Elrohir chuckled. “And they call us elflings.” The next morning things were more subdued. The imminent departure was weighing on everyone’s minds. After breakfast, everyone walked to the courtyard where the Mirkwood party was ready to depart. Lindir held Elladan and Elrohir and made them promise to be careful on patrols and to behave. They laughed. “Be careful we will, behave…well, we make no promise.” Lindir stood before Arwen. “You were supposed to marry me, Lindir.” She grinned. “How about I promise to sing at your wedding? You see, I happen to know you will be loved so greatly you will forget all about me, fileg-nin.” “Never. I could never forget you.” Arwen smiled through unshed tears. “Nor I you, my bird.” Erestor and Glorfindel hugged him tightly and made him promise to visit when he could and they promised to do the same. “We have said our goodbyes, meldir. Safe journey, Lindir.” She kissed his cheek and look at Thranduil. “Make him take care of you.” She whispered. “I will.” Lindir looked at Elrond. “Make him take care of you.” She chuckled. “I will.” Elrond stood off to the side and then approached Lindir. “Do not forget about us. We will all miss you. I will miss you.” He kissed Lindir’s brow and then his cheek. “Take care of yourself and remember this is always your home.” “Thank you, Lord Elrond. I will miss you.” They hugged and then Lindir walked to his horse. As he watched Thranduil saying goodbye and thanking everyone for their hospitality, his gaze fell on Celebrian. Lindir shivered as he remembered having this same ominous feeling when his parents left for Lindon. Celebrian saw Lindir looking at her and became concerned. She waved and mouthed. “Are you all right?” Lindir smiled and nodded. They mounted their horses and with a look and a wave to everyone, they rode away. Tbc Title: The Lord’s Minstrel 16/?? Lindir’s eyes were wide as the horses approached the mouth of the cave. He had been in awe since they had entered the forest, and Thranduil had enjoyed watching him. Their journey had been uneventful except for Lindir having fitful nights. Thranduil would pull him closer and whisper calming words and Lindir would finally sleep. Thranduil had been worried, but just thought it was because Lindir had left his home. Thranduil led Lindir into the caves and through the maze of hallways. The household staff and guard were very excited that their king had returned and quickly brought his things to his chambers. Thranduil introduced Lindir to some of his staff as they made their way to the royal chambers and when questioned about Lindir’s belongings, the king told them to put them in his chambers. Lindir was in a daze as he entered Thranduil’s chambers. He just stood and stared. Thranduil asked for a tray to be brought for them. “Are you all right, Lindir?” He wrapped his arms around the minstrel. “I am well, just very tired. I think I just need a bath and a nap.” Lindir leaned back into Thranduil’s arms. “The bath is ready. Come, you bathe and then we will eat and you can rest,” they walked into the bathing chamber. “You did not sleep well the entire journey. Perhaps now that you will have a real bed, you can sleep better.” “Yes, I think that you are right.” Thranduil frowned when he could not get a smile from Lindir. With Lindir settled in the bath, Thranduil undressed and put on a day robe. He could not help but worry that Lindir was regretting leaving Imladris. “I will just give it time. He will get used to Mirkwood.” The king whispered as he wondered around his chamber arranging things. Lindir emerged looking refreshed and sat at the table. “Thank you, Thranduil. I am sorry I am not good company. I am just feeling very tired and a bit overwhelmed.” “I understand, meleth. Come, get into bed and I will bathe and join you in a moment.” Lindir pulled the covers up to his chin, feeling very small in this chamber, he breathed deeply and tried to relax. Soon, he was asleep but he dreamed. Thranduil exited the bathing chamber and as he walked to his bed, Lindir began whimpering in his sleep. Thranduil quickly got into bed and pulled him closer. “Sshh...my sweet. I am here. You are safe. Sshh.” Thranduil stroked his hair and kissed his cheek. Lindir struggled and the sat up quickly. “LADY CELEBRIAN!” Thranduil grasped him and held him. “It was a dream, sweet one. Only a dream.” Lindir shivered and shook his head. Looking at the king, he smiled and nodded. “Only a dream. Yes, it was just a dream.” He lay back down in Thranduil’s arms and snuggled closer. They both slept peacefully the rest of the night. Lindir was much improved the next morning. Thranduil woke to a most pleasant sensation in his loins. He lifted the blanket to see the golden head of his lover hovering over his groin as a soft, smooth and very hot tongue licked his length. “Mmmm…my sweet. I could certainly get used to waking this way each morning.” Thranduil’s eyes closed as he was engulfed in the heat of Lindir’s mouth. Slowly, Lindir worked his length with long strokes and suction. As the true minstrel he was, Lindir hummed as he worked knowing this would increase the pleasure. Thranduil panted and began to thrust into Lindir’s mouth. “By the Valar, my sweet. What you do to me.” Thranduil moaned loudly as he spilled himself into the eager mouth. Lindir licked his lips and as he crawled up Thranduil’s body, he smiled. “Good morning, meleth.” “You are a wicked one, my Lindir.” Thranduil crushed his mouth to Lindir’s, leaving the minstrel breathless. Imladris was not the same in the first few weeks after Lindir left. Everyone was more quiet than usual and unless it was official business, Elrond spoke little to anyone except his wife and children. Erestor and Glorfindel tried to keep things as calm as possible and handle any issues that came up, to spare Elrond as much worry as possible. Slowly, almost a year after, Imladris began to return to the lively happy place it had always been known as. While his voice and music was missed every time the minstrels played, Lindir’s letters to everyone had let them know he was happy in Mirkwood. Lindir sang to a gathering of Mirkwood residents and guests from Lothlorien. Orophin and Legolas had returned from the Golden Woods and the feast was to welcome the prince and his husband back home. As the song ended, everyone applauded, Lindir bowed and returned to the king’s side. During the dance that followed Lindir’s song, Lindir and Thranduil danced together, smiling and kissing. Orophin asked Lindir to dance. “Fileg-nin, you are so happy. It is good to see.” “I am happy, Orophin. Happier than I have been in a long time.” “So has Thranduil managed to rid your heart of Elrond?” Lindir’s face became melancholy. “I am afraid that will never happen, Orophin. However, I have had to accept the fact that he is married and very much in love with Lady Celebrian. I have to live my life and thankfully, the Valar have blessed me with Thranduil. He makes me feel loved and cherished. I only hope I have made him feel the same.” They looked over at Thranduil who was standing with Legolas. Thranduil smiled and blew a kiss in Lindir’s direction. Orophin snorted. “I believe you have accomplished that mission.” Three years after Lindir left Imladris and as the fall colors began to show, Elrond and Celebrian lay on a blanket at the river. In these past few years, they had grown closer and their time together more passionate. He covered her with a blanket as a crisp breeze blew around them. “It will be winter soon. It will undoubtedly be a cold one this year with you in Lothlorien, beloved.” Elrond whispered as he held her tightly. “I will miss you, my love, but I need to see my parents. I have asked Arwen to accompany me but she wants to stay here. I believe she is interested in someone here but I have not been able to get her to tell me who.” Celebrian grinned and kissed Elrond on the cheek. “I will keep a close eye on our daughter. She is so much like you, Celebrian. She is strong and wise. I am in awe of both of you.” “Elrond, there is a question I have wanted to ask you for a long time, but it never seemed to be a good time.” “You can ask me anything, my love. What do you wish to know?” “I want you to tell me about Lindir. Tell me how your feelings for him grew and why you pushed them aside.” She felt Elrond tense and began kissing his neck. “Please, Elrond. I want to know.” Elrond breathed deeply as she kissed him. He smiled; she knew exactly how to get what she wanted from him. “I will tell you, but you must stop that or I will never finish my story.” Celebrian giggled. “I will stop for now but when your tale is finished, you will not be able to stop me from having you right here.” Elrond wiggled his eyebrows. “When Lindir first came to Imladris with his parents…” “Elrond, I already know that part of the story. I want to know about your feelings for him. I know you love him, and not as a son. Tell me.” Elrond sighed and pulled Celebrian to him so her head rested on his chest. As he spoke, he stroked her hair and arm. “When Lindir’s parents left for Lindon, they told me they thought Lindir had developed a crush on me. I did not believe them at first, and then I noticed Lindir watching me, seeking me out and I got worried. While I found Lindir beautiful, intelligent and talented, he was young. He had not yet reached his majority and at that time, I did think of him as a son.” “I knew I would marry and truly wanted a family. I wished for what we have, my love. I began to avoid Lindir. I did not realize at the time that I was hurting him. He thought I was angry with him. Erestor had a talk with me and then I talked to Lindir. I told him that I wanted him to be free to love and not be held back by feelings he may have for me. I told him my wish for a wife and family.” “What was his reaction?” Celebrian asked. “He was very accepting. Nothing really changed except that I no longer avoided him. Things seemed fine and then I met this incredible elleth from Lothlorien and my life has never been the same.” Celebrian smiled and propped up on her elbow. “And how has that worked out?” “I think you would like her. I do not deserve her but for some reason she seems to love me. I know I could not live without her.” Celebrian kissed him. “I think I would like to meet her.” Elrond smiled and kissed her passionately. “You know, Elrond, I could not live without you either but when did you realize your feelings were deeper for Lindir?” “When we were in Lothlorien and I saw him with Orophin. I felt jealousy and I felt ashamed. Here I was, with an elleth I loved and would marry and I wanted Lindir, as well. I never said it aloud but I did not want him to be with anyone. He was my Lindir and he was supposed to love me.” “Yet, you seemed to accept Lindir and Orophin for a while.” “I did. They were very happy and so was I. We were preparing for our wedding and then we were married and having our family. I worried about him when Orophin and Legolas fell in love, but he seemed to be faring well. You and he were the best of friends and he loved our children as if they were his own. Our lives were very happy. Then he met Thranduil. I knew from the moment I saw them together that he would take Lindir away. I am so sorry, my love. I behaved so badly, but I was angry and jealous. Through it all, you have stood by me and continued to love me. I still do not know why.” “Because you silly elf, I do love you so very much. You have made me so happy and given me three beautiful children. You have made my life full of passion and it is never a dull moment around here. I will always love you no matter what happens. I will miss you so much while I am gone, so let us not waste another moment.” Celebrian smiled as she rolled on top of her husband and showed him just how much she would miss him. Elrond stood in the courtyard and helped Celebrian onto her horse after kissing her and wishing her safe journey. Celebrian reached down from her horse, stroked Elrond’s cheek and then brushed her fingers across his neck where she had left a passion mark the night before. Elrond blushed. “I will want another one when you return.” “I will give you more than one when I return. Perhaps one for each day we are apart.” She giggled. Elrond kissed her hand and backed away. Arwen stood with her father as they watched the party leave. Elladan and Elrohir would escort their mother’s party to the borders and then continue on to meet their patrol just north of where they would leave their mother. Lindir began thrashing in his sleep. It had been a couple of years since he had had these nightmares. Thranduil tried to wake him to no avail. Lindir cried and called to Celebrian in his sleep. His lover took Lindir by the shoulders and shook him. “Wake, my sweet. It is I. You are safe. Lady Celebrian is well. Please wake.” Lindir finally became aware and held tight to Thranduil. “Meleth, it was so real. Lady Celebrian was in danger and I could not help her. She was calling to me and I could not get to her.” Lindir, it is just a dream, a nightmare. I am sure Lady Celebrian is well or we would have been told.” Thranduil got out of bed and gave Lindir some water. “Drink this and try to relax. I will write to Lord Elrond first thing in the morning, tell him you are concerned, and ask him to please let us know all is well. Now here, lay back down and rest here in my arms.” Lindir did as Thranduil asked but he could not rest. The scenes in his nightmare kept replaying in his head. The son’s of Elrond and Celebrian were riding with the patrol along the borders of Imladris, when they saw a lone rider come fast to them. Elladan recognized him as one of his mother’s escorts and terror shot through him. “Elrohir, something is wrong.” Elladan stopped as the rider approached and Elrohir rode next to his brother. The rider and his horse were near collapse and he breathed harshly while trying to tell them what happen. “My lords, Orcs attacked…took Lady Celebrian…everyone else was killed.” “WHERE!” Elladan shouted. “Redhorn Pass.” That is six days from here!” Elrohir shouted. “I made it back in three. Ride fast, your mother needs you.” Elladan quickly gave orders to his guards and rode away with Elladan and four of their guards. The others made fast for Imladris. Elrond had been told guards were riding into Imladris and he met them on the steps with Erestor and Glorfindel. “My lord, we were attacked on Redhorn Pass. Lady Celebrian was taken and everyone else killed. I am sorry, my lord.” The guard bowed even though he was near collapsing himself. Elrond swayed and then lunged at the guard. “Where is my wife?” “They took her, my lord. We tried to fight them but we were wholly outnumbered. I…am…sorry.” The guard fell unconscious with Elrond’s hands around his throat. Glorfindel and Erestor restrained Elrond. The other guards told them that Elladan and Elrohir were going after the Orcs. Elrond made for the stables but Glorfindel stopped him. “No, Elrond, no. She will need you here when they bring here home. I will go.” Glorfindel turned to Erestor. “Prepare everything, my love. Keep an eye on him.” He pushed Elrond to Erestor, kissed his husband quickly and walked to the barracks to gather guards and supplies. Elladan and Elrohir scouted the entrance of the Orcs den. They quickly planned their attack and with two perfectly aimed arrows, the Orcs guarding the entrance were shot in the throat so they could make any sound. They methodically made their way through the den, killing every Orc in their path, quietly and with stealth. As they went deeper into the cave, they began to her their mother scream. They made their way towards the sound and burst into the room killing every Orc they could see. Elrohir ran to his mother, covered her bloodied and bruised body with his cloak, cutting her bonds and cradling her in his arms. “Nana, we are here. We have you. You are safe now.” Elrohir tried to keep his voice calm but he cried. Elladan looked to his brother and nodded. “Let us go. There may be more.” The guards went first, making sure the path was clear for their captains and their lady. Elrohir handed his mother to Elladan after he mounted his horse and they made their way as fast as possible to a safe place far from the pass. They laid their mother on a blanket, Elladan began assessing her wounds, and cleaning and bandaging what he could, trying not to hurt her further. With every cut, bruise and wound he tended, his rage grew. Celebrian had been silent since they saved her, except for moaning when she was jostled during the ride. Elrohir assisted his brother and made a sleeping draught so their mother could rest better while they continued the ride. Elladan and Elrohir said nothing and the guards stood back, waiting to be needed and sending prayers for their lady. When Elladan finished, he handed her to Elrohir and they continued their ride. Three days from Imladris, Glorfindel met with the twins and took Lady Celebrian from Elrohir, who was reluctant to let go of his mother. Together they rode fast to Imladris and brought Celebrian back home. Celebrian had lay silent due to the sleeping draught Elrond was giving her to keep her calm and help her heal with as little pain as possible. Elrond had tended her every moment, refusing to leave her side. A bed was brought for him to rest in next to her and he held her hand when not tending to her wounds. Most of the wounds were healing except for a wound on her shoulder that they had discovered was poisoned. Lady Galadriel and Lord Celeborn had been notified and were on their way to Imladris. Arwen and her brothers stayed with their parents, leaving only when the healers made them when they had to change bandages. The whole of Imladris was grieving for Lady Celebrian and her family. Celebrian’s parents arrived and were finally able to convince Elrond to leave for a few hours. Telling him he would be no help if he fell ill. Elrond’s children tended to their father making sure he ate and slept, alternately checking on their mother. Celebrian finally woke after eight days. “Elrond?” Elrond jumped. “My love, I am here. Thank goodness you are back with us.” He kissed her face. “Elladan, Elrohir.” “They are here, my love.” Tears streaked his face. “They saved me.” She reached to touch his cheek. “Yes, they did and they brought you home.” He stroked her hair. “Arwen?” “She is here. I will send for them. Your parents are here too.” Elrond motioned to a healer who had heard Lady Celebrian speak. With a joyful smile, the healer made for the hallway to alert the house. Erestor and Glorfindel were trying to catch up on work that had been put on hold over the last two weeks. Erestor was going through and answering correspondence when he came upon Thranduil’s letter. “Oh no!” Erestor sat with his hand over his mouth and tears in his eyes. “What is it, my love?” “A letter from Thranduil, Lindir had been having nightmares about something happening to Lady Celebrian and they are writing to make sure all is well.” Glorfindel sighed and moved to Erestor’s side. “We must tell him.” Erestor nodded and leaned on Glorfindel’s side. “I will talk to Elrond and then write Lindir. This will hurt him. He and Celebrian are such good friends.” “She is improving though, she will heal.” Erestor looked at Glorfindel and sighed. “Physically she will heal; emotionally I am not so sure.” They held each other, giving themselves a moment to grieve. Thranduil and Lindir sat in front of the fire sharing a meal. The first snow had fallen that day and they had spent the afternoon outside enjoying the beauty. Unfortunately, the surprisingly early snowfall had also fallen in Imladris and Elrond had not had a chance to write to Lindir. Celebrian seemed to rally and her spirits were brighter for several days. Her parents took the chance to return to Lothlorien, feeling the daughter would be all right. Arwen had sat with her mother watching the snow. Elrond had taken time to talk with his sons who were determined to go after the vile creatures who had hurt their mother. “Please, do not leave now. I know your mother seems to be improving, but I do not feel we can be assured that all is well.” “Father, our anger grows every moment of every day. You did not see what they did to her. You have been told, but you did not see them touching her, using the whip on her. You did not hear her screams. We will not rest until Arda is rid of those evil creatures.” Elladan stood pacing as he spoke. “Ada, we cannot allow anyone else to endure what nana has. We must do this for our own sanity as much as for everyone’s safety.” Elrohir added with a more calm tone. “My sons, no one wants these creatures erased from our lives more than I, but it is winter and snowing and I feel your mother will need you. What would happen if you were to perish? She would not survive it. I would not survive it.” Elrond pleaded with tears in his eyes. “I will not forbid you from leaving; I just ask that you wait until the snow thaws. These horrid creatures will be hiding and it will be difficult to find them. Once the weather warms, they will begin moving around in search of food. They will be so intent on their search, they will not be aware of being hunted themselves.” “It makes since, Dan.” Elrohir watched his brother, knowing the turmoil inside for he felt it also. “Looking at his brother, Elladan nodded. “We will do as you ask father. We will wait.” Elrond hugged both of his son’s. “Thank you, my sons. Come; let us see to your mother and sister.” Celebrian grew more despondent and depressed as the winter progressed. Elrond sat with Celebrian cradled in his arms in front of the fire in their chambers. “Elrond, my love,” Celebrian’s voice barely above a whisper. “I must sail.” Elrond shut his eyes tight. He had feared this and now it was happening. “Celebrian, please, I will not survive if you leave.” She reached up and touched his cheek, brushing tears away that were falling. “You will survive. You will survive for me and for our children. You must for your time is not done here. There is still much for you to do. You will be needed for our children to survive, for our friends to survive.” “I will sail with you, Celebrian. The children can sail as well.” Elrond’s voice was almost frantic. Celebrian took his hand kissing each finger. She had not welcomed any kind of intimate touch since her attack and her touches surprised Elrond. “You cannot sail and you will not ask our children to sail. They still have things to do here. They have not heard the call of the sea. I do not wish to stay any longer, tormented by my dreams, the touches and the smell. I hear their harsh voices, feel their breath and I will not live this way, nor do I wish to fade. I will sail to Aman and hope to find peace in the Blessed Realm.” Elrond shook his head and held her hand to his lips. “Elrond, even your love cannot take those memories away. The love of our family and friends cannot take these wretched memories away. If you love me, you let me go.” Elrond said nothing, knowing she was right and hating the idea of living without her. He held her all night and made sure that, at least tonight, she would sleep peacefully. He felt that he would never sleep peacefully again. A month later, Celebrian asked Elrond to do something for her. “I must see Lindir before I sail. I need to talk to him. Can you send a letter and ask him to come?” “Of course, my love. I will see too it right away.” Thranduil and Lindir had just returned from a ride in the sunshine. They left their horse at the stables and made their way to their room to prepare for the evening meal. Thranduil noted a letter on the table. “Lindir, this is for you. It is from Imladris.” Thranduil handed him the letter and took their cloaks to hang in the wardrobe. He turned quickly when he heard Lindir gasp and caught him just as Lindir sank to the ground. “Lindir, what is it? What has happen?” Lindir could not speak and tears began to fall down his cheeks. Thranduil silently read Elrond’s letter. Dearest Lindir, I am sorry I have not answered your letter before now, but the winter fell upon us so quickly. I am afraid I have dyer news. Celebrian was attacked on her trip to Lothlorien back in the fall. Her injuries have healed but her spirit has not. Those vile beasts hurt her deeply and she now wishes to sail to Aman. We have all tried to make her stay but she is resolved to sail and I will no longer ask her to stay here only to be tormented by her nightmares. Lindir, she has asked that you to come home so that she may see you before she leaves. If possible, please come home to us. Celebrian needs you; we all need you. Elrond “Lindir, I will make arrangements, at once, for you to go to Imladris. An escort can be ready to leave in the morning.” Lindir did not answer and Thranduil hugged him. “Lindir, you must go.” Lindir nodded and held onto him. “I knew. I knew something was going to happen.” “What do you mean, my sweet?” Lindir told Thranduil about his premonition before his parents left for Lindon and then the feeling he had when he left Imladris. Thranduil just held and rocked him until he stopped crying. Thranduil could not stop his own tears, not only for Celebrian but also for what he knew he was about to lose. He had always known this was a possibility; Lindir would want to return to Imladris and Elrond. Knowing did not make the thought of losing Lindir any easier. Lindir awoke the next morning before the sun rose. He could feel Thranduil’s strong arms around him as he snuggled closer. He turned in the embrace and watched the beautiful, strong, regal elf that held him. Lindir smiled, remembering their lovemaking that night. They had joined in a slow, sensual way that Lindir had never experienced. Every touch, kiss and lick imprinting the feeling to memory. Every breath taken was held as if holding the moment for as long as possible. They mapped each other’s bodies setting it all to memory; both unsure when or if they would ever be like this again. “You are watching me, my sweet.” Thranduil grinned. “Yes, I am. Does that bother you, meleth?” Lindir kissed his chin. “Not at all. How long have you been awake?” “Not long.” Lindir tucked his head in Thranduil’s neck, breathing deeply. “I am glad you are awake. There was something I wanted to say to you last night but someone distracted me.” Lindir looked up only to be taken in a deep kiss. “What did you want to tell me?” Thranduil looked deeply into Lindir’s eyes. “I have loved every moment we have shared the last few years. You have brought such joy and passion to my life and for that I will forever be grateful.” Lindir started to say something but Thranduil put a finger to his lips and shook his head slightly. “If you cannot return to me or decide you do not want to return to Mirkwood, I will not think any less of you. I will not be angry although, I will not deny I will be sad. If you do not return, when we do see each other again, it will be with a smile on my face and in my heart. You have to do what you must, what is right and you must follow your heart.” Lindir could not speak; he just nodded and wiped the tear that fell on Thranduil’s cheek. They made love again before the sun rose and they had to part. Thranduil watched as Lindir turned one last time to wave. Placing the brightest smile on his face, he could muster; Thranduil waved back and as Lindir disappeared from view. Lindir was impatient with his escorts but he said nothing. He wanted to travel longer each day but knew his guards knew better. He was very anxious to get back to Imladris; afraid Lady Celebrian would leave before he arrived. Finally, they crossed the border into Imladris and Lindir suddenly realized just how much he had missed his home. He heard his named called and ahead on the path was the most welcome sight. Elladan and Elrohir rode quickly to him and buried him in an embrace as his feet hit the ground. Lindir did not try to hold back his tears. “’Dan, ‘Ro, I have missed you.” He cried. “We have missed you, meldir.” Elrohir squeezed him tighter. “Your mother. Is she still here?” “Yes, she would not leave until she saw you.” Elladan explained. “How is she, pen neth?” “You will find here much altered, Lindir. She is thin, pale and weak. She will try to put on a brave front, but you can see her torment in her eyes.” Elladan said sadly. Lindir hugged them both. “Then let us go home. I wish to see her.” They mounted their horses and rode to the Last Homely House. Erestor and Glorfindel were in the garden when they heard horses approach. They smiled to each other and raced to the courtyard. “Lindir!” Erestor cried. “You are back.” “Erestor, mellon! I have missed you.” “What about me?” Glorfindel grinned. Lindir looked at Elladan and Elrohir, winked, and looked back at Glorfindel. “You…not so much.” Glorfindel pretended to be hurt before wrapping his arms around Lindir and Erestor. Arwen heard the commotion and walked outside to see what was happening. Tears filled her eyes when she saw the group hug. “Do not forget about me!” Arwen ran to the group. As they made room for her she realized Lindir was in the center if the hug. “Oh, my Lindir! You are home.” Arwen was brought into Lindir’s arms and the group cocooned around them. “I am home, fileg-nin.” Lindir hugged her tightly. “Can I see your mother?” “She just fell asleep. Why don’t you bathe and I will bring some food to your room. When nana wakes we will go to see her.” Lindir nodded and Erestor and Glorfindel walked him to his room. Arwen and her brothers went to tell their father Lindir had returned. “Elladan and Elrohir do not look well. How are they?” Lindir asked as her dried his hair. Glorfindel sighed sadly. “Today is a good day for them actually. They are angry and are determined to rid Arda of all the orcs they can find. They would be out there now if they had their way. Elrond begged them to wait and now that Celebrian has decided to sail they will accompany her to the Grey Havens. After that, I fear we will not see them for a long time.” “I cannot say I blame them. I just hope they are careful and are not blinded by the vengeance. I do not think Lord Elrond would survive losing them also.” Erestor and Glorfindel nodded in agreement. “How is Lord Elrond?” “He is devastated. He feels he has failed her. He has begun to doubt his abilities as a healer.” Erestor took Glorfindel’s hand for support. “But, he did heal her injuries.” “Yes, but he could not wholly heal her and so he feels he failed.” Lindir shook his head. Their silence was broken when Arwen knocked and opened the door. “Lindir, nana is awake and asking for you.” When he walked into the sitting room of Elrond and Celebrian, he gasped. Celebrian was lying on the chaise lounge, covered in a blanket with her eyes closed. Elrond entered from the bedroom. “Lindir, you are back.” He whispered and quickly walked to Lindir embracing him. “Lord Elrond, I am so sorry,” he hugged him back. “I have missed you so much.” “I have missed you too, Lindir. Thank you for coming home. She refused to leave until she saw you.” Of course, I came as soon as I got your letter. I wish I had known sooner.” “I am sorry, I did not write you sooner and then the snow began…” Lindir stopped him. “Do not be sorry. I understand.” Lindir squeezed Elrond’s hand. “Arwen said she was awake.” “She was, Lindir, but I am afraid she has had a rough day and fell asleep shortly after Arwen went to find you. Let us sit with her for a while she may wake up. If not, you can see her tomorrow.” They sat near the balcony so they could see Celebrian if she woke but far enough as not to disturb her. “Thranduil did not come with you?” Lindir smiled sadly. “No, he could not leave Mirkwood. There is much to be done.” “I know all to well how he feels. You look wonderful, Lindir. It is good to have you back.” It feels good to be back. I did not realized how much I had missed it here until I crossed the border. I am just sorry it is under these circumstances.” He looked at Celebrian resting peacefully. “Is there no way she can stay?” “I am afraid not, pen neth. She is slowly fading and I would rather lose her to the Blessed Realm than the Halls of Mandos. I do not know how I will make it without her.” Elrond began to cry. Lindir moved closer and took him in his arms. “We will all help you. We will get you through this. I promise.” Celebrian did not wake again that night and Lindir left with Elrond promising to alert him when she did wake. He walked back to his rooms noticing the house was eerily quiet. He checked on Arwen and the twins who were all sleeping in Arwen’s bed and even noticed how quiet Glorfindel and Erestor’s room were. As he slipped between the covers and willed his body to rest, he was surprised to find tears falling down his cheeks. He let tears fall he had held in check for the entire journey to Imladris. Lindir was up and dressed early the next morning when a servant knocked. ”Lord Elrond asked that you come to his chamber for breakfast.” She smiled. “Welcome home, Master Lindir. It is good to have you back.” Lindir smiled and nodded as he followed her out in the hallway. She stopped and turned around. “Master Lindir, may I suggest you take your harp. I have heard Lady Celebrian say she has missed hearing you play.” Lindir smiled and went back to retrieve his harp. “Thank you. I would love to see her smile. Maybe this will help.” “I know it will.” She bowed and walked away. Elrond opened the door and smiled. “Good morning, Lindir. Come, we are sitting in the balcony. Today is a good day so far.” Lindir gripped his harp tighter as his nerves began to fray. As they entered the balcony, Celebrian looked up and smiled as her eyes filled with tears. “Meldir, you have returned. I am so glad to see you. I have missed you.” Lindir sat next to her, took her hands and tentatively embraced her. Elrond held his breath, hoping his wife would accept Lindir’s touch. She did and even squeezed Lindir tighter. “My lady, I have missed you. I am sorry I could not get here sooner.” “I am just glad you are here now.” She looked at Elrond. “My love, you must have something to do, do you not?” “No beloved, I am free to be with you.” Celebrian smiled and winked at Lindir. “Elrond, go find something to keep you busy. I wish to speak with Lindir. Surely, Glorfindel and Erestor can find something to keep you busy.” Lindir snorted and Elrond chuckled. “I believe I am being dismissed.” Celebrian nodded. “Very well, I will leave the two of you alone. Lindir, please call if I am needed.” “Of course, my lord.” Elrond kissed Celebrian on the cheek and left them. Lindir took her hands. “Celebrian, tell me truly. How are you?” Celebrian sighed. “Lindir, I am tired. I sit, I sleep and I am perpetually exhausted. I can no longer exist this way. I must sail and have some hope of healing my spirit. I know it is hurting my family, but watching me this way is hurting them, as well.” Lindir was at a loss for words. “Do you still have pain?” “Blessedly, no, not physical pain. Nevertheless, I have a pain deep within that Elrond and my children cannot take away. No matter how much I wish it or they try.” She shifted in her chair and stood slowly. “Lindir, help me to my garden. I need to talk to you and I need to be out of the house.” Slowly, they made it to the gardens and sat on a blanket Lindir brought. Celebrian reclined against a tree and cleared her throat. “Lindir, there is something I need to say to you. It is important that you listen. I cannot sail until I say this to you. I have said my goodbyes to everyone except Elrond, who will not hear me yet. This is the reason I waited to sail until I could see you.” “Celebrian, what is it you need to tell me?” “When I sail, I am releasing Elrond from our bond.” Lindir began to speak, but was stopped with a slight headshake from Celebrian. “There is nothing you can say to change my mind, meldir. He will protest; he may refuse, but once I say it then it is done.” “Why do you tell me this, my lady?” Lindir watched her closely. “Eventually, he will wish for love again and I want him free to take love that is offered to him and give his love in return. He has never stopped loving you, Lindir. Have you stopped loving him?” Lindir stared and tried to speak but no sound would come. He began to tremble. Celebrian rubbed the back of his hands and cupped his cheek. “I did not think so. Even the great king of Mirkwood could not extinguish your love for him.” Lindir shook his head. “Lindir, I know this is the last thing you expected to hear, but you must. When he is ready, when you are ready, love him. Love him freely knowing it is my wish. It is my last wish as I leave my home, to know that he will have love again. That he will have your love, and you will have his. It is the way it should have always been.” Celebrian sailed to the undying lands later that month. Elrond returned to Imladris, Arwen stayed in Lothlorien and Elladan and Elrohir set out in the wilds to avenge their mother’s attack. Tbc
