Elrond calmly told Lindir that apparently, his parents were only three days from home when Orcs attacked them. He explained that they were found in each other’s arms, his father trying to shield his mother. A spear had pierced them both. Lindir sobbed and Elrond held him, rocked him and stroked his hair. They shared each other’s grief and tried to comfort each other. There would not be much comfort found for many days. Lindir had nightmares throughout each night. Elrond and Erestor stayed with him night and day. They only left him briefly and only one at a time, to refresh themselves and attend to Imladris business that could not wait. Lindir woke suddenly one night and screamed. Elrond was immediately at his side. “Lindir, I am here, pen neth. I am here,” “Lord Elrond, I knew. I knew I would not see them again and I did not tell them. I should have told them not to go.” Lindir cried. “Hush now. You could not have stopped them. They would have only worried about you more. They may have insisted you go with them. You may have perished with them. I could not have survived losing you, as well,” Elrond held Lindir and whispered calming words until Lindir slept once more. “I will always be here for you, pen neth.” Lindir was better after that night. He began to venture out of his room and although he had not played his instruments again, he was visiting the minstrels. They encouraged him to try to find some normalcy again, to find peace in his music. Elrond and Erestor were coming to Lindir’s room to check on him before they retired for the night. As they neared Lindir’s room, they both stopped and smiled. Lindir was playing his harp and playing it joyfully. One week later… Lindir knocked on Elrond’s office door. “Enter.” “Lord Elrond, you wished to see me?” Lindir stood in the doorway. Elrond and Erestor were sitting in front of the window. Elrond motioned for Lindir to join them. “Lindir, there is something I have been meaning to give you, but with everything that has happen I just forgot. I hope you will forgive me.” “Of course, my lord. It has been a trying time for all of us,” he smiled then quickly looked down. Erestor gently rubbed Lindir’s arm. “Pen neth, how are you faring?” Lindir could not keep the tears from falling. “I miss them.” Erestor embraced him. “I know you do. We all do.” “Lindir, when we found your parents everything had been destroyed. There were some personal items that had not been taken. I am not sure why they were left, but they were. I took them knowing that you would want them,” Elrond stood and retrieved a box from his desk. Erestor moved back to his chair, as Lindir’s tears had stopped. “These were still with your parents,” he handed the box to Lindir and returned to his chair. “I had packed it with my things planning to give them to you but… I am sorry, Lindir. I found them in my room last night. Please, open the box.” With shaky hands, Lindir slid the cover off the box and gasped. “Oh…their rings and nana’s necklace,” Lindir’s tears fell again, not so much from grief, but from relief that he still had something of theirs, something tangible to keep his connection to them. “Thank you, Lord Elrond. Thank you.” “You are most welcome. I just wish I had remembered earlier.” “It is all right, my lord. At least I now have them. My heart feels lighter just looking at these,” Lindir looked at the precious items that were so important to his parents. They were symbols of their love and commitment to each other. “Lord Elrond, there is something I have been thinking about and needed to talk with you.” Erestor stood to leave. “I will give you some privacy.” “No, Erestor, please. I want you to be here.” Lindir took Erestor’s hand as he made to pass. Erestor nodded and returned to his chair. “Lord Elrond, I know we had planned a celebration for my majority, but under the circumstances, could we cancel the party? I really do not feel like celebrating.” Lindir’s tears filled his eyes. “Perhaps, we could just postpone the celebration.” “No. I would prefer to cancel. It would not seem to be a celebration without my parents there. Could we just cancel, please?” “As you wish, Lindir. If you change your mind, just let me know.” Lindir stood, as did Erestor and Elrond. “Thank you, my lord. You will never know what it means to me to have these.” “I think I have some idea, pen neth,” Elrond hugged Lindir tightly. “If you need Erestor or myself, send for us.” “Thank you. Thank you both so much.” Lindir nodded before he left. Erestor and Elrond looked at each other. “He should have a celebration. Perhaps we could have a private one with him” “I think that is a good idea, my lord. Tell me when and I will make the arrangements.” Erestor said as he left Elrond’s study. Elrond had honored his request and had not had a celebration on his majority. Although, Erestor and Elrond had both quietly wished him a happy day, he had spent the day quietly with the minstrels and had begun archery training. One month later Lindir was finishing archery practice when a guard handed him a note. It requested that he come to Elrond’s private chambers on the dinner hour. Lindir quickly returned to the house and washed and dressed and now he stood outside the doors and feeling rather nervous. After knocking, Elrond opened the door and greeted Lindir with a big smile. “I am so glad you came, Lindir.” “Thank you, my lord, but you sent for me. I took it as an order.” Erestor laughed, “I told you, Elrond. Lindir, here have some wine. Sit down, pen neth.” Lindir took the goblet and sat on the chair. “Lindir, how are you?” Elrond sat facing him. Lindir shifted his eyes between his friends and teachers. “Is there something amiss? Have I done something? Elrond grinned, “Yes, Lindir. You have done something. You reached your majority and did not let us celebrate.” Lindir began to protest when Elrond silenced him. Erestor moved to a chair next to Lindir. “Pen neth, we know you did not want a big celebration and we respected your wishes. However, Elrond and I have had the privilege of watching you grow from the time you arrived here, as a very outgoing elfling, and watched you grown into a wonderfully talented, very intelligent, not to mention beautiful, ellon. We love you very much, Lindir. We understand the last several weeks have been stressful and upsetting, but you deserve a celebration and we wish to give you a quiet one tonight, if you will let us.” Lindir had tears in his eyes as Erestor spoke. “You both have done so much for me already. You are my family and were even before we lost them. I would love to celebrate with you, as long as it is just us.” Elrond stood and hugged Lindir. “Wonderful! Now come, let us eat.” After they had finished with their meal, Elrond excused himself. Lindir and Erestor leaned back in their chairs and rubbed their stomachs. “That was a wonderful meal,” Lindir smiled. “Yes it was. I am stuffed, but I can never resist venison.” Erestor smiled as the cook came into the room with Elrond right behind. Elrond had several brightly wrapped boxes of various sizes and he placed them on the side table. The cook brought a silver tray and placed it on the table. Lindir eyed the tray and then looked at Elrond. “My lord, what is this?” “Well, we could not have this celebration without…” he lifted the cover off the tray. “…chocolate cake.” They each took a piece and Elrond chuckled. “Lindir, are you feeling tired?” “Not at all, my lord. You are not going to get my cake.” Lindir snorted. After they had finished their cake, Lindir glanced at the packages Elrond had placed on the table. “Now, about those gifts. Are they for me?” Elrond handed Lindir the first one. “Yes, they are. They are from Erestor and myself. We thought it was time you had you own,” he winked. Lindir opened this first to find a lovely set of long knives. “Oh my. They are beautiful. I almost hate to use them.” Erestor handed his a large box. “You are expected to use them. These are not ornamental weapons. They would fell any foe.” Lindir opened a beautiful silver sword and scabbard. They sword had a harp engrave on the blade near the handle and the scabbard had his name embossed on the leather. They also had a new bow and quiver with a set of arrows with white feathers. He was also given a new quill and more parchment to write music. Lindir was overwhelmed with his gifts and the kindness and love he felt from his dear friends. He thanked them profusely for his celebration and the gifts. Elrond helped him carry his gifts back to his room. “Good night, pen neth.” “Good night, my lord. I am glad you insisted I join you this evening. It felt good to smile and laugh again.” “It was good to see you smile again. Sleep well.” He kissed Lindir on the forehead and left. Lindir sat on his bed, rubbing his hands over his weapons. He put them away and dressed for bed. He lay in bed thinking of how much his life had changed since coming to Imladris. He missed his parents greatly but he felt a peace settle over him and knew all would be well. He slept better that night than he had since his parents left on their trip. tbc ***
