Author’s note: I wrote a drabble in which Lindir finally expresses his love for Elrond. This is an expansion on their story. It involves events before, during and after the drabble. If you wish to read the drabble, it is at my LJ. http://faramirhaldir.livejournal.com/2006/03/31/ Orophin proudly stood at Lindir’s side during the wedding ceremony. He had sat as close to Lindir as possible while Lindir played during the bridal procession and after the couple were wed. Orophin was ready to support Lindir and was pleasantly surprised when, only once during the entire ceremony, did he notice tears in the minstrel’s eyes. He gently placed his hand on Lindir’s thigh and received as sweet smile in return. Lindir played only a short time during the celebration and then was able to join in the festivities. Only once did he feel like he may lose control of his emotions. Celebrian had asked him to sing a traditional love song for her and Elrond to dance too. Lindir looked to Orophin for strength as he sang. He knew his lovers reassuring smile and playful wink were the only things that allowed him to complete the song without embarrassing himself. Saying goodbye to Orophin was more difficult this time. Because not only had they shared so much but also it would likely be a very long time before they would see each other again. They stood in each other’s arms with their brows touching. “My bird, I cannot believe this time has flown so fast. I will miss you greatly. I am so thankful for all we have shared.” Lindir’s eyes filled with tears. “I am as well. I could never tell you how much your friendship has meant to me. Thank you, meleth.” Lindir handed Orophin a small package. “I wanted to give you this,” Orophin smiled and began opening the gift. “No, please wait until you leave. I do not think I can watch you open it.” “As you wish. I have left a gift for you on your bed. I did not think I could watch you open it, either.” They kissed deeply and Lindir watched only briefly before turning and running into the house and to his rooms. Orophin waited until they were out of the courtyard and on the trail before he began unwrapping the gift. He gasped when he saw the mithril cloak clasp in the shape of a bird in flight. “Fileg-nin.” he whispered. “Hannon le, my bird.” Lindir sat on his bed holding the box in his hands. Opening the box, his eyes filled with tears and a soft chuckle escaped his mouth. Orophin had gifted him with a beautiful hair clasp in the shape of a flying bird. Lindir shook his head. “A bird in flight. We think alike, my warrior.” Lindir quickly placed the clasp in his hair and left his room to practice with the minstrels. Imladris, T.A. 110 Elrond and Celebrian had only been gone two days, a trip to celebrate their one-year anniversary, when a messenger delivered a letter of great importance. Lindir entered the office to see Erestor sitting there with his head in one hand and the letter in the other. “Meldir, is it bad news?” Lindir went to his side. “No, Lindir, it is shocking news. The Valar have returned someone of great importance and they are to live here and serve Lord Elrond,” Erestor poured wine for both of them. “I wish I knew who it was. I have no idea how to prepare.” “Well, we will prepare as we did for the wedding last year. If they are to serve Lord Elrond, then we should give them permanent rooms, perhaps in the same hallway as our rooms.” Erestor watched Lindir as he walked around the room, planning and thinking. “Lindir, when did you grow up so? You resemble Elrond, the way he walks while he is thinking.” Erestor chuckled. “Well, I have had very good teachers. So, what do you think?” “You are right. We will prepare the rooms next to mine. They are very spacious and have a private bath. The balcony overlooks the garden of wildflowers.” “Perfect. When are they to arrive?” “In two weeks. That will give us plenty of time to prepare.” Lindir and Erestor stood on the steps of the house. The mysterious elf had arrived and they waited for them to appear in the courtyard. The squires were patiently waiting to take the horses. “Sweet Elbereth!” Erestor gasped as the riders came into view. “What! Who is it, Erestor?” Erestor smiled. “Someone I did not think I would ever see again” as the horses stopped and the riders began to dismount, Erestor stepped forward. “Welcome to Imladris.” The riders walked forward. “Meldir, how are you?” “I am very well, Lord Cirdan. It has been too long. How do you fare?” Cirdan embraced him “I am very well. May I present…” Cirdan began until Erestor interrupted. “Lord Glorfindel,” Erestor walked to him. “Glorfindel, I am so happy to see you. Welcome back.” Glorfindel stared at him for a moment until the realization, of whom he was seeing, hit him. “Erestor, is that really you?” Erestor took his shaking hands. “Yes, my ‘Fin, it is I.” Glorfindel had tears in his eyes as he crushed Erestor in a hug. “You were an elfling the last time I saw you.” “I am not an elfling any longer.” Erestor grinned. “No, you are not.” Glorfindel winked. Lindir cleared his throat. “Oh, Lindir, I am sorry. May I introduce you to Lord Glorfindel of Gondolin and this is Lord Cirdan of the Grey Havens.” Lindir inclined his head, “Welcome to Imladris, Lord Glorfindel and Lord Cirdan. Would you like us to show you to your rooms?” Cirdan eyed Lindir and hooked his arm with the minstrel. “Pen neth, you have grown. The last time I saw you, you were only six or seven years old. I can see both of your parents in you, so beautiful.” Lindir stared at the Cirdan. “Why don’t you show me to my room? I think they would like sometime to get reacquainted.” Lindir blushed as they walked into the house. “You knew my parents?” They watched Lindir and Cirdan walk in the house. “Erestor, I cannot believe this is all happening. I was so afraid to come here and be alone.” Glorfindel suddenly looked sad Erestor took his face in his hands. “You are not alone. I am here. How have you been since your return?” They began to walk to the house. “The nightmares are the worst. Some nights I cannot get to sleep and then if I have a nightmare, I fear I will not wake up.” “Well, your rooms are right next to mine. If you have any nightmares or cannot sleep, all you need to do is call out or come and get me. I will be happy to help you any way I can.” At the evening meal, Erestor told Glorfindel and Cirdan that Elrond and Celebrian would be returning the next week. Glorfindel still had difficulty believing he would be serving the family he served in Gondolin. Lindir described how wonderful life in Imladris was and he was sure Glorfindel would lone lining here. Glorfindel looked at Erestor. “I am sure I will love it here.” “Erestor, I still do not know how you know Glorfindel. Care to explain?” Lindir probed. “I grew up in Gondolin. My family was part of the House of the Fountain. Lord Ecthelion was the lord of the house. He and Glorfindel were best friends and often together. I was only 30 when Gondolin fell and we lost our Glorfindel,” he looked at Glorfindel. “I loved you so. Everyone loved you.” Erestor wiped tears from his eyes as Glorfindel took his hand. “I escaped with my family and the other refugees when the city fell. Together we went to the Havens of Sirion.” He took a deep breath and poured more wine. “I was there when Elrond and Elros was born. My family decided to leave and move to Lindon shortly after their birth. My father did not feel safe at the Mouths of Sirion and wanted to leave. We heard of the kin slayings and the abduction of Elrond and Elros. You can imagine how surprised we all were when Ereinion brought them to Lindon some years later. That is how Elrond and I became friends and I vowed to serve him. That is when we met your parents, Lindir. And now here we all are, together again.” Erestor laughed. “Lindir, do you realize something has happened in Imladris without Elrond’s knowledge. We know something before he does.” Cirdan and Glorfindel exchanged puzzled looks. Lindir explained. “Lord Elrond has the gift of foresight and seems to know everything first. He also is very nosy.” Lindir laughed. “You will love him, Glorfindel. We all do.” Lindir realized how his comment sounded and blushed. “I am sure I will. I look forward to meeting him.” Erestor snorted. “I look forward to the look on his face when he sees you, and you Lord Cirdan. We have not seen you since the War of the Last Alliance.” “That was along time ago, it will be good to see him again.” Cirdan looked at Lindir. “Lindir, would you care to take a walk with me? It is a beautiful night.” Lindir hesitated, “I would love too, Lord Cirdan.” Erestor and Glorfindel watched them walk out of the dining hall. “Erestor, if I remember correctly, you were becoming quite good at chess when I last saw you. Care for a game?” Erestor stood and offered his hand. “I would love to play.” As they walked to Erestor’s room, Glorfindel leaned to him. “I loved you too, Erestor. I knew it was wrong because you were so young, so I never acted on my feelings. I was biding my time until you reached your majority. I planned to stake my claim. Thel thought I was mad, loving someone so young, but I could not help myself. You were so beautiful.” Erestor was blushing. “You are even more beautiful now.” Erestor leaned into Glorfindel and tilted his head to kiss Glorfindel. Glorfindel wrapped his arms around his waist and pulled him close. After they broke from the kiss, Erestor smiled. “Our first kiss. It was better than I ever dreamed it would be,” Glorfindel laughed and kissed him again. “The Valar have blessed me twice. First, they returned me and they have returned me to you.” Lindir watched Cirdan in the moonlight, intrigued with his beard. “Can I touch?” Cirdan raised his eyebrows and grinned. “You may,” Lindir slowly brought a hand to his chin and caressed the soft hair. He moved his hand to Cirdan’s jaw and cheek, when Cirdan turned his head, grasped the minstrel’s hand and kissed his palm. “May I touch?” Cirdan asked. Lindir nodded and Cirdan stroked his cheek before he leaned forward and kissed Lindir’s lips. Lindir sighed and deepened the kiss, causing Cirdan to smile. Tbc
