Title: Glorfindel’s Kite Author: Chaotic-Binky Rating: PG-13 although probably less. Pairing: Erestor/Glorfindel Summary: Glorfindel and Erestor fly their kites and find true love! Disclaimer: I do not own these characters, I just dream about them! Warnings: AU. Angst, slash, Erestor wandered into the library because he was bored and didn’t know what to do with himself. He looked around and spied his old friend Melpomaen who suggested that if he were that bored he could help put some books away. Erestor took a pile of books and wandered over to the shelves. ‘The finer points of Orc etiquette volume 2’ was kicked onto the bottom of the anthropology shelf and the best seller crime novel ‘The Valar Codex’ was put on the criminal fiction shelf – Erestor thought the shelf apt indeed, whoever had written this book was guilty of criminal fiction of the worst and most sensationalist kind. A very slim volume ‘Conversations with my horse’ by Legolas Greenleaf caused Erestor to chuckle somewhat and ‘All the kites I ever made – with drawings so you can make them too’ by Elrond Peredhel age 22 caused extreme fits of loud laughter as he leafed through the pages noting the childlike drawings of various kites that as an elfling Elrond had made. He wondered who had borrowed this book last and quickly dismissed the thought from his head as he saw his old quarry Glorfindel approaching. ‘Melpomaen says you are to stop making so much noise’ he said to Erestor. ‘Help me put this book away, Fin, I can’t quite reach the highest shelf’ Glorfindel did not question this; he just lifted Erestor above his head so that he was sitting on his shoulders. ‘So what book was that?’ he asked Erestor. ‘Oh! Just some old crap about kites; written by Elrond, would you believe? I can’t believe that some halfwit borrowed it’ ‘Do you have a kite Erestor?’ ‘Yes’ ‘Me too’ said Glorfindel ‘what say you, to going outside in this fine weather, and flying our kites?’ Erestor, who would go anywhere with Glorfindel - the secret holder of his heart and the constant object of his teasing - agreed immediately. They went to Glorfindels room first and collected his kite and then they went to Erestor’s rooms and retrieved a large black kite from behind the wardrobe in the corner of his bedroom. ‘Your kite is very colourful’ commented Erestor. ‘Yes – it is an Elrond mark 2’ ‘What?’ ‘I made it from directions in Elrond’s kite flying book. It flies very well’ Erestor stood there with his mouth wide open ‘You were the one who borrowed that book?’ he asked with just a tinge of embarrassment. ‘No, silly; I’m teasing you’ Glorfindel laughed ‘I had it made when I first arrived back here – I find it relaxing, you can just let your mind go and watch the kite, you don’t need to think at all. That means a lot to me.’ I haven’t flown a kite for hundreds of years’ admitted Erestor ‘I hope it’s up to the job’ ‘Erestor, if you cannot fly your kite we will fly mine together’ said Glorfindel with a winning smile. The arrived at an open piece of ground just before the forest started proper and ran up and down to get their kites off the ground. Once they were up Glorfindel looked in amazement at Erestors kite. ‘Your kite is huge Erestor, It looks like a nazgul’ ‘Yours is very colourful Fin, no one could miss it’ they watched in a happy companionship as the kites seemed to soar together and would part and come together again. ‘Mine is bigger than yours Fin’ said Erestor. ‘Yes I know’ Glorfindel replied. ‘My kite is bigger than yours also’ Erestor said with a wink. Glorfindel turned in surprise, ‘What…’ he asked, and the string holding the kite slipped through his fingers and the kite soared higher in the air. ‘Oh Fin! I am so sorry’ said a horrified Erestor. ‘It doesn’t matter’ said a crestfallen Glorfindel watching as the kite soared away into the skies and then fall into the trees where it would surely be damaged and broken. ‘Fin, please have my kite’ ‘No’ Erestor stood in front of Glorfindel and put the kite string in his hand and then put his arms around him. ‘I’m sorry Fin – I didn’t mean for you to lose your kite, let’s fly this one together.’ Erestor turned around and put his hand over Fin’s and they flew the kite together for a few minutes but the spontaneity and good spirits were lost. They sat down; the kite drifted to the ground past some trees. ‘Why did you say that? You are always teasing me and now I’ve lost my kite’ said a disappointed Glorfindel with furrowed brow ‘you offer with one hand and snatch away with the other’ It was at this point that Erestor realised that Glorfindel had been hurt, as only a person who loved could be, by his constant teasing and flirting with no clear end or hope in sight. ‘It is because I am a coward’ Erestor admitted ‘I flirt hoping you will make a move first and tease because I do not have the nerve to do this’ he held Glorfindels face between his hands and kissed him. Glorfindel pushed Erestor away from him and held his shoulders ‘You still tease me’ he exploded furiously. Erestor felt a momentary panic and then looked directly into Glorfindels hurt and angry eyes and simply shook his head. He placed his hands around Glorfindels neck and moved closer ‘No, I am not teasing’ he said in a quiet voice and then stroked Glorfindels cheek and softly kissed him ’I am not teasing you this time’ Glorfindel felt Erestors warm head rest against his chest and twined his fingers through the smooth black hair. He used the next few moments to calm himself and then gently pulled Erestors head back and looked into his apprehensive face. ‘Do not tease me again Erestor’ Erestor tried to object but Glorfindel gently stroked his lips shut and looked at him intently. ‘Be brave and say what is in your heart, and I will tell you what is in mine because I have been a coward too’ ‘I’m afraid’ Erestor voiced timidly. ‘Then let me tell you what is in my heart so that it might encourage you’ offered Glorfindel ‘When I get up in the morning I think of you and visualise you waking and how you must look. I look at the pillow on my bed and wonder what you would look like waking up there, and there is always a sense of incompleteness because you are not. When we go to breakfast and dinner I sit beside you so I can feel your closeness and the smell the scent of your hair and skin and I talk only to you because you are the only one that I want to hear. My heart leaps when we meet during the day and when I go to bed at night I cannot sleep because I am counting the hours to when I can see you again. I am consumed by you.’ Glorfindel hugged Erestor closer and kissed the top of his head and continued ‘When I see your lovely face I imagine your sweet lips on mine, I continually want to kiss you; I continually want to hold you, I continually want to love you’ ‘I want to love you too’ said Erestor in a soft small voice. ‘Shush, my love; I haven’t finished yet’ Erestor tightened his grip and buried his face into Glorfindels shoulder. ‘I want to be your warmth in your coldness, your solace when you feel pain, your friend in your loneliness’ ‘How did you know?’ asked Erestor in a cracking voice. ‘I would be all those things to you my love’ Glorfindel kissed Erestor deeply then looked at him. ‘You knew how I felt’ ‘I knew my love’ Glorfindel smiled and traced the contours of Erestors face with light fingertips ‘I love you’ ‘I love you too Fin’ replied Erestor with an expression of nervous hope in his shimmering liquid eyes ‘I am so overwhelmed I do not know how to react’ ‘Then let us just hold one another instead’ suggested Glorfindel. Erestor sat inside Glorfindel’s arms with his head against his chest. He savoured the closeness and could smell the warm musky scent and the citrus bath oil Fin favoured. He snuggled into his new love, his emotional exhaustion overcoming him and slipped into reverie. Glorfindel gently held Erestor in his arms trying not to wake him and started to draw in the kite which was on the ground some distance away; it flipped across the ground and started to rise in the air then fell across the small clump of trees. Glorfindel tugged at the kite and eventually it pulled free of the trees and dragged a colourful object made of material and wood with it. Glorfindel recognised his kite – it would only need small repairs and it would be as good as new. ‘Erestor, I have my kite back’ he said happily, Erestor remained in reverie and Glorfindel reflected that he was glad he had temporarily lost his kite because in losing something small he had gained a whole lot more.
