Chapter Twenty Three Legolas looked at the remaining rings resting in Elladan’s palm. “Elrohir and I will place a ring on your finger, my Elf warrior, because the bond we share includes the three of us.” “Aye, it does and cannot be broken,” Elrohir said as he picked up a mithril band. Legolas placed his fingers over Elrohir’s and they slid the ring on Elladan’s finger. The elf warrior grew misty eyed as he thought about how special the moment was. “I love you, both of you, with all my heart.” The prince leaned forward to give Elladan a gentle kiss before giving way to Elrohir. The kiss the elf knight shared with his brother was tender and full of love - love that had been hidden deep within them, but now blazed openly. Legolas picked up the last ring and with Elladan’s help slipped the band on Elrohir’s finger. The elf knight did not expect the feeling of joy that rushed through him as the ring was placed, but kissed Legolas soundly before kissing Elladan in the same manner. “We are betrothed,” Elladan remarked in awe. “We will be bound in a year, all of us.” “Aye, and I have never felt so happy or so much love,” Legolas admitted, his voice limned with wonderment. “There is just a couple of things to take care of now.” Elladan and Elrohir looked at him in confusion causing the prince to laugh. “You owe me a tumble, Elladan, and I intend to collect the debt right now,” Legolas replied before pushing Elladan’s body back against the bed and plundering his mouth with a deep, love filled kiss. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Glorfindel laughed so hard at the punch line Thranduil just delivered that he had to set his wine down before he dropped it. Elrond and Erestor were in the same situation and all of them wondered how the king could have ever been thought of as stuffy. “I swear, Thranduil, if I hadn’t just swallowed, I would have choked to death!” Glorfindel remarked trying to stifle his laughter. “Can you believe my youngest told me such a bawdy joke?” Thranduil replied chuckling. “I didn’t even know he knew such things went on.” “Oh, come now, Thranduil,” Elrond interrupted. “Legolas is far more aware of things than you give him credit for. Just because he looks innocent doesn’t mean that he is.” “I well know that, but he was not even to the age of majority when he told me the tale!” the king replied chuckling. “It is always a wonder what they will do or say at that age,” Erestor laughed. “I remember there were several times the twins blurted things out at the most inopportune times. You remember when the delegation from Bree came to visit, don’t you, Elrond?” “Aiya, how could I forget,” Elrond said, laughing at the memory. “They interrupted our meeting to ask me if one of my advisors was sick. Of course I became concerned and asked them why they thought that. Well, that was a mistake because they informed me that one of the guards was giving him medicine by forcing it up his rear with his elfhood.” Thranduil cackled and silently thanked the Valar that nothing like that had happened to him. “I can only imagine the delegation’s reaction.” “Let’s just say that I had a long talk with Elladan and Elrohir and asked them to hold questions like that until we were alone. They failed to understand what was wrong with what they asked. The twins were a trial, but I would do it all over again.” As if on cue Elladan, Elrohir and Legolas entered the room and looked at their elders oddly as they all began to laugh. “Speaking of the spawns of Mordor,” Erestor said chuckling. “What?” Elladan asked wondering why they were the subject of conversation and laughter. “We have done nothing wrong.” “Yet,” Elrohir added with a grin. “Nay, we have not,” Legolas reiterated. “In fact we came to being you news.” That got the attention of the gathered company and they looked at the trio expectantly. “What news do you bring us?” Thranduil asked curiously. Elrond, Glorfindel and Erestor were also interested in hearing the information the trio had to share. “We are newly betrothed to one another,” Elrohir announced as the three of them held up their hands adorned by the rings. Thranduil stood quickly, causing his chair to wobble, and Elrond had a similar reaction as they joined Elladan, Elrohir and Legolas to see the rings on their fingers. “I had hoped this would be the outcome of your affair,” Elrond admitted as he hugged the three of them. “Aye, there is not much that could make me happier than hearing this,” Thranduil added as Glorfindel and Erestor joined the circle to admire the rings and congratulate the trio. “We have one other bit of news to impart father,” Elladan said taking Elrohir’s hand. “We have chosen to cling to elfkind and will sail after we have seen Arwen live out her life.” The Lord of Imladris, the Captain and the Counselor all had tears in their eyes on hearing Elladan and Elrohir’s decision. “Ai, my sons, your mother will weep with joy as I am when she hears of your choice,” Elrond said. “Praise Eru that you have found one another and will be whole,” the king said, pulling out several more glasses and another bottle of Dorwinion wine. “Let us toast to this joyful event.” Filled glasses were passed out and several toasts made to the betrothal, the twin’s choice and several other insignificant reasons. By the time the toasts were finished two bottles of wine were emptied and most of the elves were giddy. It was an afternoon for celebration. “I am so glad we did not have to rely on our plan, Thranduil,” Elrond said with slightly slurred words. “What plan?” Elrohir asked before the king could answer. “It is nothing,” Thranduil answered vaguely. “Would anyone else like to have the evening meal sent in now?” “Aye, Thranduil a meal would be good now,” Elrond replied quickly as he looked at Erestor and Glorfindel for help. Glorfindel shook his head as a reminder that he was against the entire plot from the beginning. Erestor usually was a quick thinker, but the wine he imbibed prevented him from coming up with anything that would help Elrond or Thranduil. “I will ring for it now,” the king replied hastily as he left Elrond standing with their sons. “What plan were you speaking of father?” Elladan asked firmly. Something was going on and he was going to get to the bottom of it if it took all night. “You and Thranduil had a plan? For what?” “You have to understand that Thranduil and I love you and would do anything to ensure you sail,” Elrond said calmly. “We decided to work together to get one of you and Legolas to fall in love so you would choose as we wanted. It worked out better than we planned. You both fell for him and he you!” “You were going to manipulate us?” Elrohir asked incredulously. “Manipulate is such a strong word,” Elrond replied with a sour look on his face. “Encourage…we were going to encourage you.” “Encourage?” Elladan and Elrohir repeated in unison. “Aye, encourage,” the elf lord agreed, giving them a smile. The twins shared a look and smiled slowly before turning back to their father. “Thank you for worrying about us father, but we were able to capture Legolas’ heart on our own.” “Aye, and I theirs,” Legolas replied smiling. “I already told my father I understood their reasoning, but would not have appreciated being…encouraged, as your father put it.” “We found our own encouragement, right Legolas?” Elrohir said before pulling the prince into a snug embrace and kissing him deeply not caring who saw or where they were. Glorfindel and Erestor looked on opened jawed while Elrond shook his head in resignation. Thranduil returned and wondered why his son was being kissed so ravenously in his study. “Forgive Elrohir,” Elladan offered. “He sometimes forgets how to behave properly especially when Legolas is around.” When the elf knight finally released the gasping prince he gave a sheepish smile to those looking on. “Who needs encouragement?” Laughter erupted throughout the room as more wine was poured and consumed, guaranteeing a spirited evening.
