So beautiful & poignant--you convey so much history and emotion in so few words! I can only imagine how difficult it was for Sam all those years.. longing to go but yet unable to leave. What joy there will be when Sam finally answers the summons!

Author's Response: Yay, it finally is allowing me to reply to reviews. Thank you, Hildi. I loved the prompt words I got and they immediately inspired me. It must have been hard for Sam, hearing that call and not being able to answer. But such a reunion he and Frodo must have had. :))

Ah, Sam, how loyal he is, fulfilling his roles back at the Shire and waiting for the day he will be able to follow his heart's desire. Lovely, evocative drabble.

Thank you so much for participating!

Author's Response: Thank you so much for a really terrific prompt. I loved the words you gave me and found them very inspirational. I'm delighted to have been able to participate in your challenge. And I'm very happy you liked the drabble!

This is lovely.  I never believed Sam could be one and whole until he was united with Frodo again.  It must have been hard all those years to hear the call of the sea and know it wasn't yet time to go.

Author's Response: Thanks, Addie! Although I expect Sam was happy and busy and fulfilled, it's pretty clear from Tolkien's own words that the sound of the sea was with him even at the happiest times. And that must have been hard. I'm with you: he was never truly one and whole until he was united with Frodo again.

That's a great last sentence!

I like this drabble. It also reminds me of that unpublished epilogue with Sam and Elanor--somebody recently quoted the bit about Sam's sea longing to me.

Author's Response: Thanks! I took my idea from the unpublished epilogue, which to me makes it clear that however settled and happy Sam was, he still had the sea longing inside him. Sometimes finding an ending is hard, sometimes easy. Fortunately this time it was easy. :))
