Summary: Again, ages. The two appendices C and D contradict each other as to whether Sam is 12 or 15 years younger than Frodo. I use 15, for the rather unscientific reason that I noticed 15 first. I work out hobbit ages relatively to humans to work out mental/physical development level; that is multiply the hobbit age by 7/11 (simplified fraction of the coming of age numbers). So in this story imagine a couple of lads about ten and twenty. As a random estimate. Now, if I haven't confused you across the Sea and back...
